I chat with Dave Szymanski and Oshry in their Discord from time to time and they both seem like real good dudes. Also, I hope the new indie shooter craze inspires John Romero or other guys out of the loop to make some sick smaller games.

Romero hosed off midway through his kickstarter campaign to make Doom maps, his anniversary tie-in announcement is a megawad, he's done nothing interesting but talk about Doom for like twenty years. He's good at making new maps but I think making a new game, even just a TC, is beyond him - if it wasn't, he'd have done it already.

Only tangentially related, but since "Immortal Redneck" has been mentioned in this thread before, you might want to check out "City of Brass" if you're looking for a Roguelite-FPS fix. I've had it in my backlog for more than a year and just got around to playing it--reminds me of Immortal Redneck in a lot of ways. Greater emphasis on melee combat, dodging, sliding, and swinging around, but that means that you get faint whiffs of "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic" when you run around a level, shoving mooks into bottomless pits and whip-dragging them into pools of lava. Apparently it's on sale for $9.99 (50% off) so it's not a bad time to pick it up if you're interested.

I looked into how Doom renders its levels and it is real fascinating. I know everyone says that it is a really a 2D game, but it was the first time I really understood how and why; Doom is essentially a top down shooter rendered from the first person perspective.

There were a couple populated servers over the weekend, each with about 8 people, though one was passworded. It can be extremely laggy depending on the latency of individual players, and hit detection for some weapons is incredibly rough (the grenade launcher projectiles are slow enough that it's nearly impossible to direct hit people with it, while the hunting rifle is near impossible to land shots with when your opponent is rubberbanding all over the place), but it *feels* a lot like playing on quakeworld back in the day for those reasons, so it's actually somewhat tolerable. I don't see players sticking around long, but that might change when map and modding support ramps up.

I didn't expect Duskworld to become a big thing or whatever, was just hoping I can get a few games in during the launch window. I'll hop on tonight and check it out. I played some Duskworld a few times during early access because NewBlood runs "frag nights" on Saturdays. There's usually enough people to fill up a server, and I never noticed overly terrible netcode or anything like. Wonder if a recent update broke it?

Half-Life was also one of the more formative games of my teenage years. I think I've played the campaign (the original and black mesa) well over 3 dozen times. Lord knows how many hundreds of hours I poured into mods such as Firearms, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike, ect. Every year old highschool / college friends of ours get together for an Xmas LAN and play the classics. This always includes Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike 1.6, for nostalgic sake.
