KISS ME KRIS

I will always go with any iteration of WWE's wellness policy as being absolutely the worst thing. Its never about talent safety when its enforced, its about company liability, which is only because when some dude dies, the news goes "former WWE wrestler, yadda yadda, probably steroids but we didn't bother waiting for a medical record."

I don't know how many times I had to politely correct people when they talked about Benoit being a steroids thing. It wasn't a steroids thing. Steroids don't make you take a whole afternoon murder vacation. It was decades of splattering his brainpan with absolutely no medical evaluation afterwards. No one stopped to think that maybe getting your head smashed in nightly might have long term consequences.

its even worse now when wrestlers get cut and they send the doctor in the middle of the match. Like what the gently caress is even the point? It just makes people go "oh look WWE is safe, they have doctors"

And other than the impact screening(which they clearly don't adhere to) the Wellness violations are punitive. Rather than humiliating angles, you get fined and miss paydays because you didn't have your doctor's info in order(you gotta pay for those too, good luck NXT injuries!). Notice none of the top acts get popped despite suddenly going from jacked to flat in a week's timespan.

Way bigger and scummier than Vince, Bret and Shawn trying to work out an angle that worked for everyone.

Going with Melanie in a walk with this one. The Reid thing was extremely distasteful, but ultimately it was just a gross comment and it wasn't made a day after Reid's death.

Austin didn't have any good programs after winning the title without Vince (partially because Austin was allegedly picky with who he'd work with)
Few remember who Austin actually wrestled in a lot of that stretch (hint: it was a lot of Undertaker)

Couldn’t have had a good program with Foley without Vince? Come on, man.

Also, every time this hypothetical comes up, everyone assumes that Vince just wouldn’t have ever been a character without the ‘Bret screwed Bret’ interview. It’s just not true. SCSA had already stunned Vince on TV two months before.

Not to mention, if Vince doesn’t screw Bret, Bret is there to work SCSA again.

I don't disagree that the Pillman thing should win but the Reid thing feels like it gets dismissed too easily as "eh, wrestlers are scummy in general so whatever."

But you know, that's kind of the difficult "BUT THAT'S REAL BAD TOO!" in every one of these matchups. WWE is so evil.

It's another one of those things I think would have made it past the first round if it were up against one of at least half of the other tactics

Brock! Oh, man, I'm sorry about your...

Voting in this tournament, I put myself in a devil's advocate mindset where I mix trying to see where they're coming from and optimism to root out which choice I feel is worse. For instance, with Hawk, I can jump through the mental hoops that Vince Russo had good intentions and was too incompetent and bad at reading the room to make it work. He saw a popular-yet-obsolete tag team flailing and decided to give them a shot in the arm in the same style that was causing the company so much success. It crashed and burned, but at least they had the decency to end the storyline soon after, right?

Reid Flair was at least meant to garner sympathy for a face and was an ill-conceived attempt to get heat on a feud. It was horrid and shouldn't have happened, but at least I can see why they did it.

With the Melanie Pillman thing, I don't even know. It's uncomfortable and gross and it exists for absolutely no reason. I'm likely to vote that over anything it's up against because I can't even try to see that segment through Vince's eyes. What the gently caress.

The writer of the Charlotte/Paige Reid segment on a podcast said Charlotte was the one who pitched the idea of Paige mentioning Reid in her promo. No one bullied Charlotte into doing that storyline like Ric Flair mentioned. Actually burst into tears about the Ric thing.

To be fair, I recall people saying at the time of the Eddie's in Hell! thing that Rey was totally fine with it and thought Eddie would have enjoyed being part of a storyline even after he died. Then a few months ago I heard him on a podcast saying,"Yeah, it wasn't cool at all and I didn't like doing it, but WWE just kept pushing it on me."

Especially since Rey is pretty religious and so was Eddie.

Most tacky Attitude Era angles I can forgive, because exploitative trash TV was absolutely the style of the time and they were just keeping up. Mid 2000s though, it was passé and they knew better.

Yeah, that's basically what I was saying sits badly with me. Some fans are way too comfortable saying "well, sure, by normal human standards that's a vile thing but they're not people, they're wrestlers and one of them who you think would be offended said it was ok or went with it or something so maybe its not so bad after all."

Its gross and hosed up. If Charlotte suggested it, gave her blessing for it, or championed it doesn't really change that. It only changes how much she was a victim or complicit. And in total fairness to her I neither know what the full story is nor what her state of mind or stage of grief or whatever was so I'm not gonna jump to judge her personally as I would the company/industry with a history of such disregard and exploitation.

Wish I could find the initial WWE Network upload link of the Reid exploitation Raw.

Bix made a lot of the scripting of the segment and dorks gave him abuse over objecting to the scripting to Reid being called weak.

The script title of that Raw was revealed weeks later to be like Darwinism Always Wins or something like that.

STOP DOING HEROIN
Every time the Reid angle gets brought up someone barges in with "durrr Charlotte was OK with it and actually pushed for it" and I'm like ... is that supposed to make Charlotte look good? Or is she just covering the company's rear end for something everybody knew was a bad idea? Because it's still lovely and exploitative, no matter who came up with it. And it sure as hell wasn't cleared by the whole family, given Ric's (by all accounts genuine) reaction.

Reminder that there was literally no payoff to this angle because Paige and Charlotte did a double-turn like 2 weeks later.

My mindset towards this tournament is more or less two things. Deeds > Words and Business > Personal.

Hawk was tasteless, but unless you want to directly trace it to Hawk's demise (I wouldn't blame you if you did), it was ultimately just words (and a dumb bump).
Beyond the words, HHH actively damaged two careers (Booker and Goldust) because he's an rear end.

I think Eddie and Rey came up with the Dominic angle themselves. That's always been the story Rey has told, that a large amount of the storyline was concocted by them with a specific appeal intended to the Hispanic audience the two of them were the major draws for, using the sort of plotting a Mexican soap opera would have.
