Why don't you just pay your rent via direct deposit, and then set it up as a recurring service so you never need to think about rent.

It's definitely not all racists, although for sure gently caress them. Things like having a photo of yourself at a party drinking or in really skimpy clothing or even for expressing political opinions either way could lead to firing, and they don't even have to be honest about the cause.

That's true. Having never had that happen I didn't consider that. But most countries use credit cards, is there something about Australia's system (for example) that reduces fraud? Or just the fact that people mainly use digital payment options instead of cards?

The main thing is we eliminated signatures for pins about 5 years ago & magstripes about 7 years ago.

Contactless under $100 needs no pin, but the banks & card issuers cover that fraud entirely because they want the low value transactions to move away from cash.

Edit: we introduced pins for non-credit transactions like 20 years ago but credit cards still used signature until fairly recently

I asked a coworker of mine this a few years back when he was into it. Apparently you only need PCI-E at 1x channel speeds (whatever that means), so you just get a bunch of adapters like this and plug 'em into all the available slots on your motherboard:

PCIE as a bus can support a lot of devices, the problem is just when you need to transmit data to a lot of them all at the same time. Thankfully for bitcoiners, the OS doesn’t need to check in with them all that often when mining — in comparison to contexts like real-time computer graphics.

Edit: each bus (connector on the motherboard) can support up to 32 addressable devices, generally

Not each connector is its own bus, but yeah.

When will Bitcoin return to overcome 2017 highs? Bitcoin miners going bankrupt

Around 1 year back, Bitcoin hit its all-time high of $19665.39 on December 16, 2017. It has lost 82.74% of its value since then, as reported by CoinGecko.

This accounts for a loss of around $700 billion in a year.

Many experts believe that one of the consequences of this downfall is the fall of Bitcoin mining industry. More than 100,000 individual miners have shut down their operations and have been closed, and around 1.5 million servers have been shut down since September 2018.

According to analysts, a majority of the miners can profit only if BTC trades above $4500 level. As of today, only very few miners can afford to stay in the game, specifically those who have access to very low-cost electricity.

Keep in mind that the "majority" are people in China who are using custom ASICs forged by suicidal Foxconn workers, purchased for them by clueless investors who think butts are magic, and powered by whatever the Chinese equivalent is of Sarah Palin shouting "Drill Baby Drill".

The audience Razer and Kodak are targeting trying to have them wear out the graphics card in their computer by mining free cycles haven't been making a profit for a long time.

Does someone have a history of the top of the line machines' hash rates? That graph is misleading since it just shows the rate not the number of servers, and the rate per machine has been steadily increasing. I bet if you divide the rate by hash per machine the number of active servers will have a hell of a nosedive

The rate per machine plateaued hard with the S9 which came out in July 2017 and hashes at 13.5 Th/s. You can see in september 2017 when they started getting delivered to customers, the hashrate really took off. The entire climb from 10m to 60m was likely antminer S9s.

All of my "bitcoin is eating the earth" math calculations assumed for the sake of simplicity that every piece of hardware on the network was an S9 to determine the theoretical minimum.

I'll update my math for peak hash
