I want to make sure I understand this inauguration financing thing. Is all of this right?

Trump (or people operating on his behalf) spent about $100 million on his inauguration, which is something like five times larger than Obama's last inauguration, for an event that was not substantially larger and was less-attended than the lower-cost Obama inaugurations.

Of the money Trump spent on the inauguration, he spent $25 million - more than the total Obama spent - on an event-planning company, Hargrove Inc., that doesn't publicly acknowledge having done any work for the inauguration.

Of the money Trump spent on the inauguration, he spent $26 million - again, more than Obama's total - on a second event-planning company, run by a friend of Melania's, which mostly used the money to pay subcontractors.

That's a total of $51 million spent on event planning for the Trump inauguration, out of ~$100 million spent in full. Of that $51 million, $25 million is publicly unaccounted for.

At about the same time, Trump paid $25 million as a settlement in the Trump University case.

Is that right?

Yeah, that's about right.

I honestly prefer the "Hargrove got 5x their going rate because Trump is so toxic and they don't even publicly admit to doing the work" version of the story because hopefully some of that money trickled down to the workers because Donny gets the BEST DEALS.

They are investigating something, we won't know exactly what for a bit longer, it's fun to speculate but the speculation is just that.

I mean yeah, Trump clearly committed fraud. That is what he, and his family, and his associates, have been doing constantly for decades. They were criminals and are still criminals committing crimes constantly.

They should all be in jail and the only reason they aren't is because 30% of the country would and does believe anything if it fits what they want to hear.

That's right.

It's pretty clear what happened, despite people ITT maintaining that a lack of evidence means that we can't extrapolate anything. The $26 million given to Melania's friend was probably legitimately used for the Yugest Inauguration Ever. The $25 million listed for Hargrove Inc was probably diverted for the Trump University settlement. The other $49 million? Your guess is as good as anyone else's.

Nah, there's no reason to assume that that's the specific grift that occurred. "Two numbers are the same" isn't enough to draw that conclusion

Now, did he commit fraud? Heck yeah

Basically if you remember the Stormy Daniels payment of what was it, like some weird specific amount of 133 thousand? Which ended up not being money from some other payment for the same amount somewhere else even though everyone figured it had to be. 25mil is too round of a number, it's likely coincidence.

It may not be, but it's speculation until we see some actual proof that it's even the payment that's being looked into.

(I mean the question "Did Trump commit fraud" and "Is Trump breathing" have the same answer, generally, but there's no reason to get excited over this until we get more information.)

I dunno... If I had to disappear $25 million dollars of public money I wouldn't just charge that exact amount to some random event planning company...

I would have no idea what i was doing, but if you were going to do this sort of thing you would split that amount up into smaller less obvious amounts right? charge 1.2 mill here, slightly less there.. maybe mix it in with other legitimate payments to companies which did perform work for you?

Like I totally believe that they would try and do this, it seems inconceivable that whatever accountant he hired would do it that poorly.

Well, one issue is that a lot of this money is going to end up coming from foreign nationals. It was donated money, and this sort of donation for the big party has always been a wink to the candidate from people wanting stuff. Trump just took that part to the next level and involved other countries.

Ain't no one better to peddle guns than a man who sold guns illegally to a hostile foreign power and then covered it up by trading the money to cartels for coke. Hell the amount of crime he caused had an added benefit for the gun companies since it made the police more militarized and made scared white people buy up guns to protect themselves from the government and 'scary'(read: black) druggies.

I am surprised the NRA didn't hire him earlier now that I think of it.

No, people are misreading numbers and getting the 5-1 thing from the amount spent on that particular contractor. Obama’s first inauguration cost less than Trump’s did, but not to an eyebrow raising degree when you adjust for inflation (roughly 190 mil to roughly 210 mil, per some googling).

e: note that the event is paid for by a mix of public and private funding.

e2: Obama’s second inauguration wasn’t much different. Bush’s 05 one was more expensive than either of Obama’s. There’s nothing unusual about Trump’s total inauguration committee budget. If you want to look for the grift, well, Obama in ‘09 was rather a bit more impressive show and crowd...

I think you've got it backwards. Hargrove has been doing Presidential inaugural balls for generations. They probably did Trumps too, but half-assed it and completely ripped off President Deals. But, they don't really want to put their name on it. Melania's friend is the suspicious one, as it appears she did the exact same thing as Hargrove, and got paid basically the same. The difference between the two is likely the tax on the commission that Melania's friend received, which if you remember was built into Cohen's reimbursement for the Stormy Daniels payment. It's a giant red flag for money laundering.
