It's worth pointing out that In Flames is literally just an idea and the band has not had any original member in it for nearly a decade

I always was of the persuasion that InFlames are one of the most overrated bands ever, I don't like them now, never liked 'em before either

Of course some of my friends swear by them, and boy are they gonna be pissed off now :P

The Jester Race through Clayman is peak melodeath, though yeah I mean if you don't like that genre then it's probably not gonna do much for you

how's that working out for them

Kilometers Davis

They begin again

In Flames was very important to me throughout my getting into/early metal days. I’m not even mad about the new music though, I just wish they would change the name and stop pretending that it’s In Flames. I know people like to give Opeth poo poo for changing but that’s not even near the state of In Flames.

I miss being really into melodeath. The last big album I obsessed over was Insomnium - Winter’s Gate.

-everything by At the Gates
-Archenemy's early work (the first 5 albums, though I think only 2 of those qualify as melodeath)
-Amon Amarth
-the good Haunted albums (first two)
-some albums by CoB

I might be forgetting something, but that's basically all the melodeath I like. But growing up I was a lot into powermetal and atmospheric stuff too, so go figure :P

I always love when melodeath talk gets brought up in places, It'll always be my comfy fallback genre. Speaking of In Flames though and Kumba did mention it but you guys should check out Subterranean. It's peak melodeath to me bordering on meloblack at points.
And Subterranean is related to this, the vocalist on that EP's version of Dead Eternity does vocals for Cardinal Sin which is a melodeath/black band featuring the guitarist and songwriter from The Somberlain era Dissection.
Ablaze My Sorrow also slaps. Night In Gales too.
gently caress I've been binging power metal the last few days but I might switch to melodeath

Same, except this year I also discovered Dark Oath - When Fire Engulfs the Earth and kinda went nuts over it for a bit. I mean it's a very simple album, but I'm a simple man, so hey. The opener track is very much a Wintersun pastische, the rest of the album can be pretty closely summarised as "Amon Amarth meets Arch Enemy". Just an hour's worth of catchy-rear end goodness.

Call me "pixeltits"

I love Your Chance To Die for melodeath, especially because Som's vocals are way more brutal/tech style screeches and toilet gurgles than typical melodeath vocals. Pairs well with Missi's more traditional growls.

I just looked them up because I had forgotten Missi's name, and supposedly Som is quitting music altogether, according to the drummer.

I was gonna pop in for my semi-annual "Is there any new Melodeath this year?" post and I see that you have all beaten me to the In Flames bashing I would inevitably engage in. As someone who's favorite album of all time in any genre is The Jester Race... I also wish they'd change their name. Or just stop. Apparently they're super popular still but I cannot imagine who the gently caress listens to their contemporary alt rock horseshit. (I don't even really like Clayman TBH.)

Is there actually any good new melodeath? Winter's Gate or Kalmah's Palo are the only good things I've heard from the past year or two. And even then I think Palo is a pretty weak Kalmah offering.

So, former Scar Symmetry vocalist Christian Älvestam has a project called Svavelvinter. He writes all the music, and lyrics are by this older dude who writes RPGs for a living. They've now released a concept album based on one of those RPGs. And it's pretty loving great melodeath, not surprisingly very reminiscent of Scar Symmetry but with less keyboard bombast.
