I had the tasting menu at rich table and I thought it was not good. Lotta weird choices on there, like poorly cooked pasta, and overall not a good unifying theme. Did I screw up or something?

Yeah do never get the tasting; I always get a lot of bites and apps, a few pastas, and once in a blue moon an entree. That’s probably counterintuitive

Also, any recommendations for omakase?

Sasaki is IMO very good. It is run by the chef who opened Omakase and got them their star in the first place. He only serves 6 per seating at the counter, so you’re sure to get him instead of some understudy. Highly pricey though

Tasting menus are good for restaurants to get rid of stuff and reduce food costs but it takes a skilled chef to create good cohesive dishes when that's the reason the tasting menu was added. It's also meant to be 'value' for the diner, getting more food for their buck.

Yes, I've been there before. It was very good and authentic Chinese food that I really enjoyed.

Out of the three bib gourmand Chinese places in that area, I think it was the best over Wonderful and Yi Yuan.

Wonderful was really good as well but I just like the dishes at Royal Feast better.

Royal Feast has replaced their menus from the last time I've been there. I think it's mostly the same, but the menus are a lot sparser and I think you have to order a lot of stuff off menu now. Certainly I know they used to have banquets you could order and I didn't see that last time.

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
Where are you in the Bay Area?

I don’t know about CBD specifically but for everything cannabis I like Caliva.

I think the top meats were the spicy pork bulgogi, the kalbi shortribs, sliced blade steak and the garlic pork belly. Opinion was split on the chicken and rib-eye. I thought they were ok, but my companions didn't seem to find the chicken texture a bit spongy like I did, and the rib-eye was good but I thought sliced too thinly.

I can anti-recommend Korean Spring BBQ in Santa Clara. The meal itself was fine, though my wife described her noodle soup as a bit starchy (both the noodles and the broth).

However, they have a big “We Accept Bitcoin Cash” sign in the window and also have a paper on their door explaining that “because of the increase in minimum wage” they’ll be closing between 2:30pm and 5pm.

The only reason we went in was because the friends we were meeting for lunch were already seated. We won’t be going back.

I haven't been to a Korean BBQ place here that didn't leave the smoke/meat smell in your clothes.

When I was in Korea, I noticed a lot of the places there put the vent almost directly over the grill, so it actually catches everything--you could get dressed for a night out, eat some barbecue, and then go to the club without smelling like the restaurant. Ever since then, I've wondered why I don't see places like that here.

In Korea some places will just straight up give you plastic garbage bags to put your outer clothes in so you can keep the meat smell off of them

Interesting. Does this place by chance have full liquor? I am about to switch from managing a bunch of bars to selling booze, meaning I will need to visit accounts/wine and dine buyers. I definitely want to hit the South Bay and love Korean BBQ. I know very little about places down there other than Manresa as I've spent the last 20 years between Oakland & SF, so any recs are welcome!

E: I was in the Richmond the other day and went to a place called K-Element BBQ that was AYCE Korean BBQ. I didn't notice a meat smell either in the building or on our clothes after (and I'd just come from a photo shoot so I had a lot of clothing with me) but I will say that it was a Monday night and not that busy. It was huge for an SF restaurant, so presumably they can get very busy and might smell more strongly then.

Responding to old posts but Plow has a kinda-sorta view iirc and it’s a spot that’s actually worth the brunch wait. Also a hell of a long time ago but Greens in Fort Mason used to have a breakfast cafe type thing and we grabbed some pastries and coffee and sat in the dining area on a Sunday morning. Not sure if that’s a thing or not but it’s a beautiful view.

Seoul Kalbi in San Bruno I'm pretty sure doesn't have a full license. I only saw beer/wine/shochu on the menu.

There's a spot in downtown Mountain View that has big vents over the grill like that, but honestly their food is nothing special. I couldn't even tell you what the place is called anymore because they've changed names something like 3 times in the last few years. My husband and I go occasionally for AYCE, and last time we went they included hot pot with the meal which was kind of nice, but all of the ingredients were already in the pot when they brought it to the table so most things were inevitably overcooked by the time we got around to them. The concept might have worked better if we had a larger group, but for two people it was a bit much to be grilling a bunch of meat and trying to eat a giant pot of soup and rice and banchan all at the same time..

That's right. Here it is. But it's like you always have compared the sword, the making of the sword, with the making of the character. Cuz the stronger, the stronger it will get, right, the stronger the steel will get, with all that, and the same as with the character.

That's a shame; it was an old fixture of when the Bay Area was still weird. For some strange reason, historically in this area, 'Hofbrau' referred to that kind of cafeteria-style carvery place. There were a few in SF until not so long ago (not Harry's, but the same style).

My friend's dad used to have meetings for the local Volkswagen owners club at the one in Mountain View.

Did anything ever end up happening with the old Garden City casino building near there? I know it was a concert venue for like a day, but I haven't been by there in awhile.

I’ll be on my own in Novato for the next couple of days. Any Marin/south Sonoma recs for a solo diner with a car? I love spring produce so simple seasonal places are great, and I also like anything Asian, or anything that’s hard to find in the Mid-Atlantic. I’ll be taking the ferry into SF on Thursday, but other than that I have no plans. Any suggestions are appreciated. Novato does not exactly seem to be an exciting dining destination!

Most of Marin generally isn’t a very exciting dining destination. Not sure if the San Rafael downtown farmers mkt on Thursday night has started yet; that can be fun. Thurs morning farmers market at the Marin Civic Center is good, too.
