It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, MAD-2R World
As a stupid newbie I don't have a good feel for what I really need in terms of mechs to do X skull rating, but uh I tried to do a 2.5 with a Dragon, two Shadow Hawks and a Centurion and uhhhhhh that was Real Bad. I was outnumbered 2:1 by mechs that all seemed equal or bigger than mine.

On the other hand my Dragon is doing way better now that I boosted the armor and loaded it up with SRMs and support weapons to just charge right at people.

On the screen where you choose your mechs and mechwarriors, there is a little "drop tonnage" or somesuch gauge in the bottom right-hand corner. That should be close to the same as the skull rating. If it is the same, you should generally be okay. As you get better, your mechwarriors get better, and you start being able to use called shots all the time, you'll be more and more able to punch above your weight. But that's a good guideline.

Four good mediums can comfortably do 3.5 skull missions. Add a good heavy and they can pull off any difficulty.

The big hurdle for a lot of people is controlling engagement sizes. You will frequently get outnumbered but the key is to not be engaging 8 enemies at once. Try to maneuver so it’s essentially two 4v4 engagements.

Depending on your builds that lance should absolutely be able to do a 2.5.

If you're on hard configs drop a skull from what you can do. Four mediums or two med two heavies can probably win against eight to ten mediums, heavies, and ppc carriers, but you'll get hosed up doing it if you're not careful. 2 to 3 is fine for it on hard though, just uparmor for extended engagements.

A lot depends on starting enemy positioning too. I dropped into one level that had eight heavy and assaults in a semicircle around me, in forest, at the very start, and I just instantly turned around and went home.

e: I've been seeing a lot of "hard" assassinations that are two lovely lights and a broken down heavy or assault so I have like three assaults almost ready to go at day 250 lmao (spent too long going back and forth for useless contracts).

Ah it's nice to see that some of the lostech weapons are still as garbage as they were at release. Medium pulse laser has double weight and +4 heat buildup in exchange for, uh +5 damage. Lol

Still, I got 4 double heatsinks from the same flashpoint so that should be fun with my new black knight.

Yeah, never go up the middle. You want to have hosed up the first group pretty bad before the reinforcements show up (or hosed up the "reinforcements" before the main guys show up). Sometimes this means going backwards. Try to hang out in trees or have a lot of evasion pips (or both). Also, in general, keep your mechs together. That first guts skill is still the best one. Definitely focus on the dangerous/fragile threats (AC20s, missile carrier cars etc. can ruin a medium in 1 turn). In the long run, 3 pieces from different mechs is almost as good as 3 from the same mech, so don't be shy about coring enemies if things are tense.

Thinking about it, I probably just had the bad luck of being attacked by the main force and reinforcements simultaneously, in bad terrain. Whichever way I went I had my back to somebody, whoops.

I really like the "gently caress it withdraw" button and everything works better about it in career mode. If it's not worth the payment or hassle, just leave. If you can push through a bit, complete an objective, then good faith leave and get a bit of loot and cash as long as you're not banged up too bad. On more than one mission I stuck around just long enough to core an assault or a heavy I only needed one more piece of then chose it as my 1 guaranteed salvage for immediately bailing. gently caress it!

I just completed my first Banshee and it's the PPC/ML one. How terrible of an idea is it to put leg and arm mods on, a shitload of small lasers, and just have it step on things until they die

e: The -10 dfa damage leg mod seems useless to it actually

That's a really solid build for that mech. It's not a good assault, mind you, but just kit it out in all the SMLs and punch mods and JJs and enough armor to tank the world. It will solidly get you through the early assault phase of the game.

Pro tip: put in a cockpit mod to avoid injuries and don't put ANYTHING ELSE OF VALUE in that mech. I know that +dmg small laser looks sexy, don't do it.

You now have something nuts like 2000 hp of ablative armor for everything you actually care about that will get everyone's attention by punching their balls.

Well, yeah, it's a 95 ton mech with a reasonable sized engine and room for weapons. It's basically an Atlas that went on a two week diet to fit in a bathing suit before a vacation.

Ditch the leg/arm mods and fill every hardpoint with MLs and SLs. Then give it a pilot with coolant flush and (preferably) tac9. Brawler is the best pilot type, as it also has evasive movement, giving it more evasion and entrenched when running. Sprint in with vigilance. Precision strike till overheating. Coolant flush and do it again. Punch when you need to cool down.

I ran this thing before coolant flush and improved evasive movement was a thing and it shredded.

You can replicate the BNC-3S on the AS7-HT. You can do it minus 2 MLs on the AS7-D. Do I do this every single campaign? Yes I do. Will it be even better now that coolant flush is a thing? Yes it will.

Doing a pretty cool flashpoint now where the turrets turn on before the script says they power up in a trap, then three rounds after you win the mission and can't leave a bunch of heavies teleport in a circle around you and shoot your heads off

I love my punchbot Banshee, and personally I prefer to give it massed MG's than small lasers.

Partly for critical hunting, much more because I like the ludicrous torrent of tracer fire it unleashes.

I would have went with the MGs but I got a +60 melee damage mod and didn't have room for ammo. This thing gets beat to poo poo but one shots anything that isn't a heavy (and if it's lucky, a lot of heavies).

Out of curiosity is there a way to modify the amount of melee damage a chassis has in the jsons? Also, are there mods that change up the hardpoints a mech can have, or is that something else you can do yourself in the jsons?

Both of those are in the data/chassis chassisdef files. Edit the jsons with notepad++. Additional hardpoints might be a little more involved if the chassis doesn't have the right hardpoint visual.

FWIW editing .jsons helps fix weapon imbalances so you don't need to wait for a patch. Find the weapon .jsons and adjust PPC, AC10, and Med/Large Pulses to a damage/weight/heat balance you find agreeable. Or cheat and make every gun 1 ton and fill every single slot with a hellgun and heatsinks.
