Even loving Discord's getting one now, and all of them, loving all of them, give indies a bigger cut of the sales.

Isn’t 30% a lot less than the physical retail cut.

It’s this. Shareholder expectations are causing developers to gut their core franchises because lol who cares if their internal metrics are unrealistic the only thing that matters is that shareholders and CEOs can golden parachute away when they’re done killing the golden goose.

Games like that are complete games with just the original purchase. Some of those DLCs are what would in earlier days have been complete sequels. Some of them are cosmetic trash you can ignore if you don't care what your mans are wearing or what music plays. Plus, as mentioned, that's like 5 years of ongoing development. Usually each time a new major DLC comes out the base game and a bunch of earlier DLC goes on sale. I got Crusader King II and a bunch of DLC for $10 once. Plus anyone who enjoys those kinds of games IS getting hundreds or thousands of hours of play time, so they probably think they got their money's worth. A single play through probably takes more than 20 hours even if you play at max speed the whole time and there is a ton of replayability.

Sagebrush posted:the thing that always gets me is the insane standard of "getting my money's worth" that gamers seem to hold. at full price a game is like 60 dollars. that's the equivalent of maybe three movies at the theater + popcorn, or once nice dinner out on the town. a few hours of entertainment either way. yet they act like if the game doesn't hold their attention for months on end, with a 40 hour single-player campaign and 1000 hours of multiplayer content with new poo poo to do all the time, they somehow got ripped off? And if you are a stingy bastard who needs to get great value for money, just ignore the hype and wait a few years to get the game at a quarter of the price during a sale. Fully patched and with plenty of online guides to help you. It doesn't work well for multiplayer games, but for single player games all you lose is the excitement of getting hyped up and then inevitably disappointed.
