Correct on both counts. It's the main character from the Scary Movie series and the "run from the creepy horror monster" game.

It's such a shame Henry Cavill's arms don't do the same thing in that Mission Impossible movie.

Maybe this isn't the best place to ask, but are there any good mods for the original XCOM games? I remember there was some pirate themed one released a while ago that supposed to be pretty good (if somewhat weird), and I recall there being some sort of source port as well.

Do you just need UFO Defense, or are there mods for the other two? (Terror from the Deep and Apocalypse). I ask because they're on sale on GOG at the moment. I already have UFO Defense on Steam, as I got it as a free download via Humble Bundle or something. However, I don't know if the Steam version has any issues.

I know Terror from the Deep is supposed to be super-hard, and I remember reading that Apocalypse wasn't as good.

Open xcom is the open source version that has a bunch of quality of life improvements. All you need for it is a copy of ufo defense, the downloads page has instructions. The pirate themed thing you're thinking of is a mod for open xcom called xpiratez. Itt has some interesting ideas but it's basically just porn and only very lightly pirate themed.

IIRC pretty much all xcom mods are actually for openxcom (the source port) which is currently the first game only. So look at the mod list on their site for some ideas. The pirate mod xpiratez is definitely for openxcom and outside of being slightly porny it's supposed to be pretty decent but I haven't really played it so I can't say for sure myself.

I was beaten on OpenXCom as I was typing this but re: the other two games:

Apocalypse is pretty good but it made a lot of changes from the original that weren't popular at the time (the realtime mode in particular was a point of contention). There aren't going to be any mods for it though - it doesn't even have a fan patch because of how byzantine the executable is. There is a source port being made but it's nowhere near finished yet.

TFTD is basically an official total conversion for the original and you can safely skip it.

I thought I saw something saying you needed either UFO or Terror to run XPiratez, but maybe that just ties in with Terror being like a total conversion. (I'm guessing you can use/import files from TFTD, but OpenXCom only works with UFO)

Are there any mods you have played that you'd recommend? I remember seeing a mod in the Steam reviews mentioned called Final Mod Pack, which looks to be a big collection of mods.

Terror from the Deep just seemed interesting since it was underwater, Cthulhu (?) themed take on the series, but from what I remember reading, Microprose just jacked the difficulty up to the point where the game was nigh-impossible.

Would you recommend checking out Apocalypse to someone not familiar with the series?

Other way 'round. There was a bug in TFTD where it would automatically revert to the easiest difficulty level after the first combat.

No. The original game had a bug where all difficulty levels defaulted to the easiest level. This resulted in people complaining that hardest difficulty was a cakewalk, which meant the hardest (never actually played) difficulty for the first game became the easy difficulty for TFTD.

nope, that was in the original xcom, which was why they jacked the difficulty way up in tftd, because everyone who was playing on hard went "hey guys this is super easy even on hard mode"

Honestly the theming in TFTD is actually pretty cool but yeah, it's essentially the same game as the first one with a bunch of arbitrary difficulty tacked on. Even the hardcore fans of the first one that can breeze through a superhuman game hate it because it's not even the FUN kind of hard, it's just a bunch of BS.

Apocalypse was actually the very first X-Com game I played aside from a demo of UFO Defense ages ago so I might be biased to answer "yes" but I think the game is intuitive enough that you can more or less understand what you need to do without having previously played an X-Com game. You might want to check a guide for beginner's tips just because there's a few specific things you'll want to be doing that aren't completely intuitive, but for the most part the play cycle is easy enough to follow and the interface is a lot easier to use than the older games. You probably won't WIN on your first attempt, but this is true of the originals as well.

Incidentally, this bug is fixed in OpenXCom so you won't have to worry about it if you play that.

I always heard this about the original xcom. The story was this bug made everyone complain that the game was too easy, so microprose scratched their head and made tftd much harder, to the point that it sucked.

You know that thing that happens to mods where the modder has a forum and listens to forum feedback, but the forum is dominated by people who are impossibly good at the game so the mod becomes impossibly hard and grindy? Last time I checked XPiratez was coming down with a bad case of that. The first version I downloaded started you off with a flintlock parody version of XCOM's initial loadout and a space pirate ship. The last version I downloaded starts you out with nothing but various melee weapons and an unarmed flying prison transport bus.

If you ignore the theme the version I started with had a cool idea for an XCOM economic engine. Live prisoners are your best source of money, along with being required for research. Capturing foes alive is pretty tricky in general, but especially so from outside of melee range. A diverse range of opponents is almost a plus, everything from Wolfenstein Nazis to everything from Doom to plain old sectoids and ethereals.

In any non-Paradox game I would have to assume that this was a weird fetish thing, but given some of the poo poo I have seen go on in Crusader Kings 2 makes me think this could result in hilarity instead of cringes. There are a few good CK2 LPs on this very forum that have, uhm, well-connected dynastic trees, and the results always amuse.

With CK2, the incest is part of the game since it's also all about them eugenics and making sure everyone in your family is a strong genius. Stellaris is about empire management though, with very little focus on individual characters.

Yeah, lineage isn't any sort of mechanic in Stellaris so I'm pretty sure that mod is just a fetish thing.

Yeah, Xwedodah's the Zoroastrian thing for incestuous marriages and Zoroastrianism was the first religion in Crusader Kings 2 to do the "divine marriage" thing. It's just a Paradox game in-joke.

I do wonder what an incest-based AI would do, though. Are they all about building alliances? Making vassal states of the same race so they could 'trade resources'?

Also CK2 is the kind of game where there are at least 3 ways I know of to utter the phrase 'I accidentally ate my pregnant sister-wife' so having mere incest is kind of meh.

It would do a lot of inbreeding. Meaning Divine marriage should just combine repugnant and slow breeder traits. And slowly stagnate, degenerate and die out, just like Spanish Habsburgs.

I checked that mod like a year ago. the trait it adds is something very minor like "Divine Marriage: +2% reproduction speed, -5 years lifespan". It does nothing else as far as i could tell. I forget if it is a species trait, or a government ethic.
