But if what I've heard here and there on the Internet is true, then that stuff just doesn't sell and isn't worth the effort and resources to translate. That said, I've noticed more than a few English VNs that don't have those elements in them these days (or maybe I'm just better/more patient when it comes to searching Steam), so maybe things are looking better?

But yeah, I think the primary issue is that long full-blown VNs are an entirely different beast to localize from short porn games, and most people are hesitant to pay $30+ for one because westerners have long since gotten used to pirating them. To a degree that applies to all titles regardless of their content, like Evenicle is a pretty famous (or infamous) "high"-budget porn game which by all accounts is definitely not vanilla, but it costs about $40 and subsequently has 140 total reviews on Steam which means it hasn't exactly flown off the shelves at least there. I loved Lupin III and I don't even care about the obviously-anachronistic pop culture stuff. Then again, I also love Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, a show I can only watch in Japanese because I don't mind the dub but I feel like something is truly lost in the dubbing process since there's no accurate way of presenting those moments from the original Japanese where a character just says random poo poo in English because the creator likes western music and just names all of his poo poo about that. Now, more on topic: while it isn't a TERRIBLE game (the presentation and gameplay all work and are all fine), I just don't particularly care for Sequence/Before The Echo. https://store.steampowered.com/app/200910/Before_the_Echo/    I think where it really bites it is the gameplay loop combined with the writing. The writing comes across as feeling like it thinks it is very clever but it just ends up feeling kinda.. not clever and just sorta tedious or annoying. The gameplay loop is the following. 1. Start on a floor 2. Receive recipes for new equipment, spells, and the key to the next floor 3. Go choose to fight one of 3 enemies on that floor 4. You fight the enemies in a ddr battle but the arrows are never the same 5. You win the fight and hope that the enemy dropped one of the items you need to continue 6. You spend your experience points to forge the item, with a higher chance of success requiring more experience points, up to a cap of 95% chance so you can spend a bunch of exp and de-level yourself and still fail, and you can sell any items you don't need by converting them into experience 7. Eventually make the key to the next floor and go fight the boss and continue The writing is so annoying because the game acts like it has an interesting story to tell but it just kinda... doesn't. Maybe I'm just jaded, and yeah this game isn't really the worst thing out there and is probably the best game posted in this whole thread but god drat did the game, its ending, and its secret ending just sour me on the whole thing because the ending is just such a non-entity that it makes me feel like I just wasted my time in a game that already feels like it is just wasting your time. That's what is so disappointing about Sequence/Before The Echo. It is a game with an idea but it feels like instead of properly building on that idea, they just use the idea to waste your time and draw out the experience in tedious ways.

Like the same way Fallout New Vegas would also get that tag for example. It's not really terrible, no, it's just a combination of rhythm gameplay and grind that hasn't aged well, especially with its (relatively) limited soundtrack. It was part of the early Steam -indie boom when it came out in 2011. It's not bad per se, but there are much better games with similar concepts that have come since that the high marks it got back then that makes it seem quaint.
