how much changes if the UK & France actualyy were to step up (lol) and increase their numbers in the area? dunno if they have the ability to provide as much air cover but theoretically at least they could step in for a few years until the US can get some adults back in the room? if nothing else they can just offer up some hostages/sacrificial lambs like the US put in Manbij to keep the turks from triggering a bigger diplomatic crisis, hopefully

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/trump-withdraws-troops-syria-without-consultation-1.4955697

quote:

Erdogan, though, quickly put Trump on the defensive, reminding him that he had repeatedly said the only reason for U.S. troops to be in Syria was to defeat ISIS and that the group had been 99 per cent defeated. "Why are you still there?" the second official said Erdogan asked Trump, telling him that the Turks could deal with the remaining ISIS militants.

With Erdogan on the line, Trump asked national security adviser John Bolton, who was listening in, why American troops remained in Syria if what the Turkish president was saying was true, according to the officials. Erdogan’s point, Bolton was forced to admit, had been backed up by Mattis, Pompeo, U.S. special envoy for Syria Jim Jeffrey and special envoy for the anti-ISIS coalition Brett McGurk, who have said that IS retains only 1 percent of its territory, the officials said.

Bolton stressed, however, that the entire national security team agreed that victory over IS had to be enduring, which means more than taking away its territory.

Trump was not dissuaded, according to the officials, who said the president quickly capitulated by pledging to withdraw, shocking both Bolton and Erdogan.

Caught off guard, Erdogan cautioned Trump against a hasty withdrawal, according to one official. While Turkey has made incursions into Syria in the past, it does not have the necessary forces mobilized on the border to move in and hold the large swaths of northeastern Syria where U.S. troops are positioned, the official said.

The call ended with Trump repeating to Erdogan that the U.S. would pull out, but offering no specifics on how it would be done, the officials said.

lmao

Adults in the room aren't gonna change anything, realistically the only reason we hadn't ALREADY thrown the Kurds under the bus was because Trump's foreign policy is basically run by the military, who are the ones who actually have to deal with 'okay so we screwed over the the last ten people to be our local allies but you should work with us as our local allies.' As soon as we had an actually functional state department again they'd be going 'Turkey is WAY more important to us in the Kurds.'

ISIS can only exist in a vacuum, which isn't possible now that the Iraqi and Syrian governments are on a strong footing militarily. An "enduring victory" would be one where we stay there indefinitely just to be sure that nobody gets the wrong ideas.

You can get a sense for what a credulous dolt the president is when he's like "yeah that's a good point, why are we still there?" in a conference call, for something he's almost certainly been briefed on at least a dozen times before.

Yeah, leaving Syrian civilians to be killed by genocidal pro-Turkish militias and resurgent ISIS is good!

There's a freeze on payments, so yeah nobody in the military gets a check until the shutdown is over.
