The VA hasn't paid some students for more than six months now, due to IT errors. I've only been paid because I was part of an earlier group, so I'm good because my account hasn't been touched since the error has happened. If the government shuts down, I could possibly not be able to continue nursing school Jan 7th. 130,000 students have had to delay starting this past semester in September due to this.

We had a big theft of equipment last night. Of course on the part of site with no cameras. First port of call as far as suspects? Me. Because I previously explained (and fixed) known access methods. gently caress off, I'm hungover. Boss was hinting that I kept a way in secret to steal poo poo (actually true but it's stupidly convoluded and impractical - requires a crane to the roof of warehouse on a site with guard gates)

Yeah, good luck. I wish you the best, but once you've been accused of stealing, it's all downhill from there. Semi-megapost upcoming. It's late (early?), but I had to cook for the next few weeks. This is a potato curry, the block I used was from the local Asiana marketplace, the only English words on the otherwise-Korean packaging were "Vermont Curry: Honey, Apple."  It's good! In classes, I've been trying to be a help to everybody - one example is a teacher released the content for next semester to a single student, so I volunteered to receive the booklet, and I scanned and made copies for everyone in the class:  Having this content in everybody's hands allows them to follow along in class with the powerpoints, teacher trusts us more, we get a little more leeway when it comes to asking questions, etc. For all the previous years the teacher made these booklets, but there was a moratorium put on printing things at the school, so we have to do it ourselves if we want it. Instead of fracturing the student body, it's better if we just all have them. I'm not doing this solely to gain friends, but instead so we all pass together, and have an easier time. Also, considering things have gotten a bit awkward at school, I'm not concerned if I get completely ignored. However, that's not what happened! People gave me plenty of kudos, and the past few weeks (month-ish?) I've been "adopted" by most of the women in class (and it's nursing school, so that's 85% of the students), given plenty of tips and supplies, and after printing these books the class all got together and gave me a big card signed by everyone, and a few individual cards and separate giftcards, all totaling way above the value of the books and whatever I'd value my tutoring time to be. It's been great and I actually cried at one point, which is something that never happened before! All of this leads me to something comparatively inconsequential: one of the groups got me a big tumbler with a straw lid, as we're not allowed water bottles without straws anymore (  but this is a "prestige" school so whatever). However! It didn't really fit into my cupholder that well: 3D printing to the rescue! I've always hated these cupholders, cans rattle around and most cups rock back and forth anyway.   It's a snug press-fit (ABS plastic), but  ...the cup fits perfectly now, and the gentle taper also guides cans into that little sunken area, improving even normal use.  It's a small thing, but 20 minutes designing and 2 hours printing (for two - they're hollow single-layer ABS for flexibility) and I won't ever have to live with that annoyance, and get to enjoy my gift.

Yeah, but the delay is problematic, y'know. The hosed thing is, if you read the shutdown letter, they've actually funded the VA and education programs. But not the claims and payment processing departments. So, money's there, nobody to hand it out.

I'm surprised places like your nursing school (they call them schools, right?) don't have contingency plans for stuff like this. They aren't going to get a new enrolement halfway through a year, and there's a clear paper trail that you have the funding.

Yeah, general conversation is just plain old "nursing school." We are on a nonstandard schedule, compared to general universities, and that brings up a lot of issues sometimes. 2019, for example, is three semesters (in which the third semester is a separate academic year) from January 7th to Dec 19th. The VA has difficulty with even normal schools at the best of times. At least I'm in good academic standing, and have secured funding, so they're willing to work with me. Just finished year 1's finals with a 3.71 cumulative, for example. Not the greatest but not the worst, compared to other students who scraped by (or didn't), who got the, "You know, if you withdraw between years, and take six months to fix your poo poo, it won't count against you academically" talk.

At the very least, when I was in college (in ancient times) if a professor had notes like that, they made them available at the campus copy center for the cost of printing and binding like you did. Usually pretty cheap.
