Safety Factor posted:Fires of Cyraxus was the pet project of Andy Hoare who now heads Specialist Games. It was meant to be a book focusing on Ad Mech and Tau, but it is likely not happening at this point. He had written most of it in his spare time and the changes from 8th would require a full rewrite of the rules and, depending on how they'd want to frame it, maybe even the background. It's not happening. At least not for a long time. I see this said quite often and I want to clear up that Andy Hoare is often misquoted here. He didn't actually write it in his "Free Time" he wrote it during "Overtime". I point that out to basically say that there is no Imperial Armour book that wasn't part of a planned larger project. It wasn't a "side thing" he was doing but a planned project that got shelved. Just to verify all that I chatted with him earlier today and here was that part of his response: "Hey mate - it’s a slight misquote, I said ‘overtime’, not ‘free time’ - No books have ever been a free time pet project, that’s not how books are written. I worked on it over the Christmas break before I took on Specialist Games in January 2016, and then handed it over. By that time though, we saw the final version of the 8th Ed rules and background, which it didn’t fit. You’re right in that it could still have been a historical book, but our first 8th Ed book not supporting the new timeline (plus primaris etc) would have been very weird from a commercial point of view."

I wonder if they have a document that describes the fantasy of playing each army. Like, Custodes would focus on every model being the equal of other faction's heroes but lacking strong synergies while Guard would be about having a lot of weaker infantry that have synergies and powerful tanks and artillery. If they've got something like that I'd be really curious what it says about Tau.

Fellow goon Dicky and I played in an awesome 10 man hockey themed 40k event today. It was hosted by a local player at his house and had a strong narrative element to it. We had to choose a champion and they got certain hockey based bonuses throughout the 3 games if they completed certain tasks. This is basically nothing but while driving around tonight I found a place selling GW stuff that is like 45 minutes closer to me than the official GW shop. I had been looking for a hobby shop in my area that wasn't Michael's/Joann's/Hobby Lobby and I finally found it. Their website sucks and only shows Magic and HeroClix but after looking at their Facebook page, they're a legit "hobby shop" with miniatures, card games, board games and models like I remember from when I was younger. They also do weekly tournaments but it's mostly focused on 30k and Star Wars.

I don’t think the point is that it matters whether he was working in free time or overtime, the point is that it was part of a wider planned project and he was working on it ‘officially’ rather than as a literal ‘not on work time’ project, which is implied by the misquoted story. I also find it interesting to hear about where the creative direction of the design studios come up against the commercial strategy of the company: the point about releasing a basically historical sourcebook immediately after GW put out 8th with its advanced timeline makes sense to me and I hadn’t previously thought about it that way. Based on the conversation from the first VoxCast it seems like at least the model side is completely artist driven, with new rules and units stemming entirely from whatever the artists come up with. That might explain why we have 9 Primaris Lieutenants. Based on your interactions with GW does that seem to be the case?

Forge World works pretty hard at this. When that tourist image slipped through it caused a huge issue. Not just from the standpoint of customers pointing it out and it being a bit embarrassing, but from the scramble that then took place and meetings with legal to ensure they weren’t going to run into a copyright problem. Mistakes happen in any project that size but people were held accountable for them as well.

But they also get assignments of things to do, especially in the HH line I would imagine. (“Blood Angels up next... we need a Praetor pack for those!’) I think the main point there is you want an artist passionate about the model they are making. If you have a guy that LOVES Chaos, and really gets excited about making Chaos models... you don’t want to force him to work exclusively on Eldar (excuse me... Aeldari). I don’t know this for a fact but the reason we keep getting more Primaris Ltd I think is probably because the digital files are easier to manipulate and you take a little of this and a little of that and boom! New pose/new model! That’s a complete guess on my part though, and probably a bit of an oversimplification of the process but it makes sense to me.

Or they gave a bunch of sculptors a Primaris Lieutenant assignment to test their skills when they started doing the Primaris, and so GW have a stockpile of Lieutenant designs from the last 4/5 years.

This was my assumption too. Making a character officer for the most popular range in the game seems like a logical challenge. I also figured the artists were really excited and went overboard, especially the ones with a favorite chapter.

Admittedly mainline GW is at least as bad as FW when it comes to errors. The 8th ed Guard codex shipped with a couple of major errors that apparently no-one caught (I guess because the writers don't know the rules) and required a day 0 FAQ to become functional.
