is there a mod to make the mouse wheel alternate between switching floor levels and zooming in/out by holding down CTRL or another button? The requirement for both functions to exist on different keys is kind of frustrating.

Thankfully, since they are hard-locked to Avatar facilities in WOTC by default, it's a lot easier to come equipped for the fight now.

Keep in mind, once you "awaken" a ruler at a facility, they can show up all over the goddamn place, particularly in guerrilla and retaliation missions, but also in Avenger defenses, which is... fun... when it's the Archon ruler and he's right next to you as you exit the Avenger...

Get real liberal with grenade usage. They won't do a ton of damage at first, but a Sectoid hiding behind a tree is basically impossible to hit compared to a lightly singed sectoid standing out in the open.

Your soldiers can't hit poo poo for the first month or so, you have to just throw bombs at everything if you can, so rely on grenadiers to do much of the heavy lifting early on. Even if you're standing next to somebody with a shotgun, always leave a soldier with a grenade as reserve in case he misses, because chances are he will.

When a grenade highlights terrain and objects, it (usually) means it will blow up that cover. So use that liberally in the beginning of the game to leave aliens without cover, or at least low cover. Prioritize high ground for aim bonuses and high cover for defensive bonuses. Try to get an understanding of how far an enemy can move so you can position yourselves and not get flanked - getting flanked is going to get you killed fast. Stun lancers will be very dangerous in this manner, since they can use both movements and still attack. Keep in mind that Overwatch has an aim penalty except when ambushing, unless you're breaking concealment, so don't try to overwatch creep unless you have nothing better to do.

You'll get used to the mission timers. Keep in mind that some objectives that involve hacking can be made easier with a Specialist since they can hack remotely with their gremlin.

Bring one flashbang on missions (in my opinion.) Either use it when you know the enemy will be able to survive and fire off a couple times, or save them when a Sectoid mind controls one of your dudes. Flashing them will break the mind control. Just gotta hope it doesn't mind control your dude with the flashbang. Sectoids also have melee vulnerability, meaning Ranger slashes do a little more damage to them.

Somebody call for an ant?

The other big thing is just learning which dudes to prioritize when you cant kill the whole pod this turn. In darn near every case early game if something must live through the turn, make it the sectoid if you can. They almost always use mind powers over their gun which you can undo the next turn by offing/flash bang grenading it.

Meanwhile stun Lancers have a chance to knock out any dude, regardless of hp and should always be the first to go.

Their critical hits also do like a billion damage and will outright murder basically anyone in the early game, so yeah, bring the hammer of God down on stun lancers ASAP.

Finally beat this game with WotC, I never did the final mission previously.

Few questions:

1- Do they ever explain how they magically know Vahlen was behind the Alien Rulers? I felt like I missed something when Tygan was immediately like "VAHLEN IS A MONSTER!" but I think I apparently ran into them out of order since I met the Berserker Queen first.

2- Was the final scene a hint that XCOM 3 will go the Terror from the Deep route? That could be interesting.

That final salvo of missions was sorta rushed and kinda silly. I dunno, the progression of the story mission stuff in this did not feel as good as the first game.

Veotax

The Vahlen stuff is from the mission attached to the Alien Ruler DLC, if you hit 'Integrate DLC' for WotC then it disables the mission and just puts the Rulers in the game so it makes some of the dialogue a little funky.

Re: 1 - The gist of the mission that WotC leaves out is that Vahlen set up her own hidden lab and started tinkering with samples of DNA/tech from mutons, archons (who I think technically can trace to their lineage back to cyborg mutons) and thin men/vipers. In that, she found fragments that the Ethereals had deliberately suppressed to make these races more compliant and bred a ruler of each race out of those, just because she could.

Yeah, XCOM1 seemed to heavily imply through the visual design that floaters were mutons turned into cyborg abominations through some process that basically drove them mad with rage as well.

Carecat posted:

The TLP-weapons you get in the campaign have upgrades pre-installed that cannot be switched out. Each new weapon tier adds an additional upgrade. The weapon's visual appearance is thus not supposed to be customizable outside of color and camo pattern.

Between the bonus weapons from legacy ops and the weapons picked up from the Chosen after you kill them, you can have an impressive squad loadout towards the endgame.

The only other big change is that sparks used to be unlocked with a mission that plays really poorly with the stamina system. The option you checked is super good and makes stuff flow better, but those missions it kills have some pretty good flavor. Not worth restarting your run, but they unlock early enough that it would be worth it to do a quick run that dips into them just to experience it.

Yeah I'm clearly going to need a difficulty mod when I have mods for the worse hero skills, WOTC power curve and Grimy's loot mod. I've added some new aliens (Custodian, Muton Elite, Sectoid Commander, Armored Viper), MOCX Initiative and Chosen Weaponry Fix, A Better AI: Chosen Tweaks.

Fun fact: The Archon King's Devastate lands on the Archon King's next action. If his action is delayed... or perhaps never arrives? Those explosions never land. Stasis or a lucky Execution (or just a straight-up kill if you can pull it off) can all delay or prevent Devastate from landing.

Doesn't mean it isn't utter horseshit though. The damage isn't quite as guaranteed as I used to think, but avoiding it requires having a single very specific ability available to bring along. It also requires that the Psychic not get hit with the Archon King's gently caress-You-Piledriver ability, likely resulting in his getting stunned or knocked out.
