Jealous Cow posted:That’s what’s so strange about this. Wouldn’t there have been other signs if things were literally about to collapse? No, not really. Part of the reason that recessions are so unpredictable is that even though risk factors in the economy are often identifiable, it's basically impossible to determine before the fact which ones are bad enough to cause systemic issues when they go off. It's like the joke about how everyone who's about to get laid off is 100% certain that their job is secure, no matter how bad things get. There's truth it to because you never really know why things are going to poo poo until they go to poo poo. Another way to look at it is that most economic indicators tend to be good right up until they aren't. It's counter intuitive, but the economy running well is a reasonably good sign that a recession is on the horizon.

The big concerns are as follows: a) we're kind of overdue for a downturn b) the recovery from 2008 was a false recovery in many ways c) the people in positions to deal with a sharp downturn have views that are not good for handling downturns d) Trumpybrains is President. As such it would be probably best to get us over that cliff quickly than to draw it out any further because it's not going to get any better. Gen. Tom Keck, commander, Barksdale Air Force Base, Shreveport, La.: I was the commander of the 8th Air Force. We were in the midst of this big annual exercise called GLOBAL GUARDIAN. They loaded all the bombers, put the submarines out to sea, put the ICBMs at nearly 100 percent. It was routine, you did it every year. A captain tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Sir, we just had an aircraft hit the World Trade Center.” I started to correct him, saying, “When you have an exercise input you have to start by saying, ‘I have an exercise input.’ That way it doesn’t get confused with the real world.” Then he just pointed me to the TV screens in the command center. You could see smoke pouring out of the building. Like everyone else in aviation that day, I thought, “How in a clear-and-a-million day could someone hit the World Trade Center?” Then later when Air Force One landed at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport LA, home of the nuke capable B-52s (and I have seen many B-52s making maneuvers over the area and they look pretty dang close when they are in a landing pattern and flying over I-20) Brian Montgomery: As soon as we landed, Mark Rosenker [director of the White House Military Office] and I went off the back stairs. There’s this guy who looks like General Buck Turgidson from Dr. Strangelove, big guy, all decked out in a bomber jacket. He was straight out of central casting. We said, “What do you need?” He said, “See those planes? Every one is loaded with nukes—tell me where you want ’em.” We look over and there are just rows of B-52s, wingtip to wingtip. I joked, “Gosh, don’t tell [the president!].”

Since Reagan this poo poo has been a sort of endgame of Conservatives. Dismantle and weaken the Federal Government for their cronies to make a buck. It was impossible to reason with Republican posters and conservatives around 2000 after 9/11 and now we are at the bed they made. All this corruption and problems come through their end, easily manipulatable and influenced dupes. Putin controlled President with a financial and possible literal nuclear option at his fingertips to spite. Conservatives are really the American Taliban. Hail Bernie, hail AOC, the only way to send things in the right direction inching along the way to sanity and away from the rear end end conservatives have dragged things to. And they still will not be open to reason and sense and offer up a whole lot of bullshit. America’s problems are not just foreign, it is them and they are local.
