Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Jimmy T.
I am only a couple songs in but I am also digging the 21 Savage album, production is sick and I feel like 21's voice/bars have improved quite a bit and fit really well. I only liked a few songs of his before this but will definitely be bumping a few off here at least.

Also, 9th Wonder released his third installment of the "Zion" instrumental series, Zion III. I love 9th's production and am going to have this on repeat at work.

I think it's fair game to criticise lyrics in trap music, rock has a guitar as it's foundation and for rap it's clearly the lyricism.

Anyway I'm adding Awfulswim (Father), Veteran (JPEGMAFIA), Mudboy (Sheck Wes) and Nasty (Rico Nasty) to my end of year list. Hadn't listened to Peggy before but Black Ben Carson is also excellent, totally didn't pay attention to that when it came out

This is really interesting man, enjoying this

Is the album after Amerikkkas Most Wanted pretty good for Ice Cube? I heard he dropped off a little bit in the mid 90s.

for all music, it's clearly what sounds good. now what sounds good is subjective. complex rhyme schemes can sound great. or tiresome. migos or gucci aren't in the top 50 lyricists dead or alive but the way they flow on a beat sounds so loving good it made them millionaires.

disrespecting any music because it lacks a sufficient degree of lyrical complexity is flat out retarded, but there's one really specific type of rap enthusiast that prizes it above all else, and i'm not going to call them racist but they definitely spend a whole lot of time looking down their nose at a whole lot of black artists. like what you like but don't be a condescending prick.

just listen to what sounds good and goes hard. like the new 21 savage.

The big difference is he started leaning a lot more into west coast gangsta rap style. A lot of the political undertones dropped out, and production had a lot less traditional East coast boom bap style. Basically amerikkkas most wanted was cube making a PE album.

That said I don't think he really fell off until like war and peace, and most of his 90's stuff is good to amazing. You just have to expect a different sound. Death certificate, the predator, and lethal injection are all great, and his westside connection stuff is solid .

Westside Connection was a solid cube project, it was him, Mac-10, and WC. Had a nice cypress hill diss on there too.

Listening to the 21 Savage album. It's fine. Not bad, just nothing about it stands out to me either.

Definitely not putting this on my best of the year list when stuff like the Black Panther soundtrack, Daytona and Kids See Ghosts exists.

However, now I'm listening to TA13OO and this is pretty great!

I saw Denzel open for Run the Jewels last year and I didn't even know who he was at the time. I wonder if he played any of these tracks when I saw him. I don't remember much about his set other than it was surprisingly solid for an opener.

Why did he split up a 43 minute album into 3 discs, though? I mean I guess it was an artistic choice, but what was the reasoning behind it?

Listening to Astroworld before I finalize my best of the year list. This is my first time hearing Sicko Mode, which I guess has become a meme and gets called "this generation's Bohemian Rhapsody" or whatever.

I guess I can see the surface-level comparisons with both of those songs having beat changes, but it's not like Sicko Mode is anywhere near as good as Bohemian Rhapsody lmao

Like I don't feel compelled to go back and listen to it again or anything. I'm further into the tracklist and I've moved on. It wasn't standout. Nothing from this album has been so far, honestly.
