I guess I can understand why it's decisive and all but I personally believe bunny hopping makes everything better when games are designed with it in mind and dusk is no exception. The only thing it needs is an option to just hold jump, it's not like the timing is even hard when you can hold space through the landing. Might as well make it easier on the old joints.

He's soooo dreamy...

Dusk feels like the perfect combination of the best aspects of Doom and Quake. It has the movement and verticality of Quake, but the expansiveness, encounter designs and general sense of progression from Doom. Quake does what it does extremely well but barring a couple notable exceptions everything feels like everything else, and you really can't say the same for Doom or Dusk.

The part of Dusk where I felt like bunnyhopping kept my rear end alive was on one of those final maps (I guess “dweller in the darkness”? The one with the translucent blue arena)—specifically during the round with those red cultists assholes who threw the homing red missiles. On the hardest difficulties, the missiles will outrun you and while you can circle strafe your way around a few of them, three or four will hunt you down quick. You can try to kill them as fast as they spawn, or use the jump pads to fling yourself around...but bunnyhopping is always available so that’s what I used.

Iirc bailing off the edge won't kill you just reset your position? Maybe it's different on the higher difficulties

Actually huh yeah you’re correct, you can fling yourself off of that particular area on at least Cero Miedo and live.

But real men stay in the fight 100% of the time. 110% of the time. Real men hop around like rabbits and rain fire and fury upon their foes.

There's an interesting fps game on steam
https://store.steampowered.com/app/853770/Maximum_Action/
I don't recommend buying it at the moment unless you want to support the dev (singular, student) since it's 20 bucks and reallllly early access and there's not much there at the moment and what is there isn't finished (from the adorable way the main menu has physics objects that wake up when you start the game, too how all the levels are like max payne mod levels) BUT it has potential for the cinematic FPS genre that we don't get enough of (FPS max payne, the specialists, FEAR) and you can already dive kick people out of windows or shoot the rocket that someone launched and blow their arms off.

If you're a Half Life 2 fan I cannot recommend MMod enough. It takes some doing to get running and the developer is fixing some issues (not playable with HL2 campaign yet without glitches, but Ep 1 and 2 run perfectly). It's not just revamp weapon animations (which are great!) but lots and lots of little touches that make fighting and moving around so much more satisfying and punchier. There's some subtle weapon bob when walking and running, Gordon's glasses have these little nicks and scratches on them that you can see in certain lighting, cool stuff like that. It took 9 years to make and you can definitely feel it.

Other neat stuff: shader underwater that smudges your vision but not enough to obscure anything important. Once you get out of the water, moisture will stream down Gordon's glasses.

Stuff can get caught on fire and spread. I threw a grenade in a cramped apartment in Ravenholm and almost burned to death because all the shelves and desks went up in flames.

You can toggle between having hitscan or actual calculated projectiles. I kept on hitscans because 14 years of muscle memory was throwing me off when I had on projectiles. :v:

Player and NPCs will dropped discarded magazines during reloads. Small touch but very neat!

Iron sights! Completely optional, but having the ability to take more pinpoint shots is appreciated. Please note that it doesn't affect accuracy at all, it's not like CoD.

View kicks during reloads and other actions. Can be toggled (most of the mod's content can be toggled in the options menu). Adds that lil' extra punch, like when throwing a grenade or slapping in a shotgun shell.

This does look really good, and I recently re-installed the entire HL series on my computer. I wonder if any of this could be ported to HL1-Source. But yea, I like the Half-Life games. They have good "momentum" where you feel you're constantly moving forward and not many games do that super well.

I do NOT remember the environments of MP2 being that flat. Also the bullet dodge made me laugh out loud. How extra.

YEAH the sense of progression and adventure and escalation of stakes & tension in the HL games have is unparalleled if you ask me. Titanfall 2 came very, very close. Respawn would be the perfect people to carry on the series.

I've seen a lot of recs for the Titanfall 2 campaign. Is it as replayable as something like Doom 2016? Does it have bots for multiplayer? I assumed the multi was dead by now and I didn't want to buy the whole package just for a 6 hour campaign (even though I'd do the same for something like Doom.)

I think the real spiritual successor to HL is the Metro series. It uses the same mix of interior and exteriors, or the mix between lonely areas with a solitude feeling and more action oriented parts, or how it mixes up monsters and soldiers as enemies. Another similarity is how they are mostly linear but still with a bit of exploration and feeling of not being super rail roaded.
In addition they graphics are very good and the atmosphere is superb.

The campaign is replayable. It was worth maybe $20 to me. The multiplayer has a dedicated crowd, but you will only really find matches for one mode and you have to play it at peak hours.

It's not remotely as replayable as Doom 2016 (it's more of a traditional, linear single player campaign without as many fun arena fights) but it's still way worth the money to play through. You can probably find plenty of multiplayer matches but the community by now is just people who have played the game non-stop since release.

Metro has a lot of HL2 style breaks to mandatory unskippable exposition (which I'm fine with, and enjoy in both because I'm not replaying them) but it has almost no level variability or layered mechanics. It's just the tension ramping, which it does really well.

So play them, definitely. It does have a lot of similarities.

Yeah, MMod's great, though I am playing with projectiles on which I'm digging a lot. Lets me be a lot more mobile.

Only issue is that I've got no crosshair for my pistol weapons, which has suddenly become a dealbreaker since I just got the magnum. Might try and reinstall, see if that fixes it.

That's a glitch the dev is fixing in the next patch, according to comments on the moddb page.

Yeah I'm super hype for Metro Exodus. I just hope they let Anya actually do something in the plot this time around because while I wasn't exactly expecting a feminist manifesto from Last Light I hoped that the sole female character would do more than get pregnant and stay behind for the final battle because....reasons??

I took that literally, so I did some digging. Anya from Metro isn't Anya, she's Anna, and her voice actress is also Anna. She's Anna both in Metro and in life, but she isn't Anya--that would be Alicja. Anna who does Anna isn't Anya, but she is Caroline Becker in Wolfenstein '09!

Replaying through Half Life 2 with MMod and one thing I'd forgotten is that there's actually a lot of shooting. Which sounds dumb when I say it out loud, but in my mind HL2 was a bunch of set pieces and physics puzzles and you only ever fought, like, four or five enemies at a time. Turns out I'd misremembered, because enemy counts are actually closer to a 90s-style shooter than a lot of the proceeding games that wouldd later try and ape HL2's style. I don't mind, I'm one of those brokebrains with a soft-spot for Source engine gunplay and the mod's changes don't hurt it either. I am free man 410,757,864,530 DEAD COMBINE.
