Went with Booker because I prioritize harming the living over harming the dead.
Now you can say "But Eddy's family and friends"
But I doubt Booker's family and friends enjoyed seeing him get punked by a dude who was racist to his face and that was it, no moral.
And then that dude gets to go on to become superchamp and spend his career acting out his own fanfiction for his own life and become heir to a billion dollar company and live a charmed life and rehire another Hulk Hogan and wear stealth Neo-Nazi adornment in a big Wrestlemania entrance and...

I had to go with racist HHH because he won the goddamn match against Booker T in such a definitive manner. They could have easily had HHH win the title back at the next PPV or even on an episode of Raw if they were so goddamned determined to keep HHH's reign of terror going on. Even a Dusty Finish where HHH retains would have been better then what we got at Wrestlemania 19.

I feel like Hogan needs to hear that response about 30 times a day.

And also be Scissor-Kicked in the back of the head by Booker T.

"But he needed to be kept strong for Goldberg" He tells himself twice a day to convince himself he's not a racist rear end in a top hat.

What makes it worse on a practical level is that even though Goldberg was coming, Raw had an alarming shortage of available babyfaces at the time (Austin was pretty much done, Shawn Michaels was feuding with Jericho, Rob Van Dam seemed to have had his goose cooked for something, etc). I mean, to me, this is how The Hurricane of all people ended up feuding with The Rock... and that was great but still a bit out of nowhere. They could have easily had Booker win the title by beating the racist to become the much-needed superface alongside Goldberg (whose first WWE feud did notably not need the title).

I guess only certain kinds of Uppity WCW Guys get to win at some point though.

Wait, Rock came back in the same timeframe?
And it never occurred to them that the money match was Goldberg v Rock?
I need to remember my drat calendar.
If true, that may be the height of HHH's Rock complex.

They did Goldberg/Rock at Backlash.

Eddy's In Hell is almost quaint compared to some of the entries involving death exploitation (deathsploitation?) but Booker/HHH is unforgivably racist and insane.

Like, it'd be nuts if that was an angle from the fuckin 80's, let alone when it actually was.

This isn't even a derail. This is an elaboration. HHH trashing a black man to preserve a money match that was inferior to a money match involving another black man. Was this...double racism?

"I have to be kept strong so I can have the big match with Goldberg instead of the Rock." Has that element even been explored here?

Rock was done by Backlash. Part of his WrestleMania win was the writing on the wall that "beating Steve Austin at WrestleMania" was the only thing left for the Rock. Afterwards, he had no reason to stick around and he just put Goldberg over before going back to Hollywood. He didn't appear again until next WrestleMania's build and after WMXX, he didn't wrestle for another eight years.

If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine.
If it was just the “Eddy’s down there, IN HELL” line (which I think is the intent) and not ALL of the Eddysploitation then yeah HHH/Booker is way worse. But my brain refuses to separate that one Randy Orton line from the totality of shittiness that followed for like a year after Eddy died.

Pope Corky the IX

What are you looking at?
People are quick to say "Well, Eddy would have loved that line!" but nobody seems to jump in and suggest "Come on, Eddy would have loved watching his wife be degraded and humiliated on national television for almost a decade after his death!"

I question that the WWE knows what the dead would want done with their memory, but they keep saying time and time again that they and their living family, who by the way are totally not reliant on the WWE for their well-being, would love to have their death exploited for cash so who am I to argue?

my wrestling rule of thumb is that you can say whatever terrible racist monstrous line you want just as long as the violence directed towards you is immediate and equally terrible.

Use the N word? get stabbed

Make fun of a dead brother? get your head kicked in

Wrestling very rarely rewards me with this.

Is it also true that despite WWE then giving Vickie a job out of sympathy and from the bottom of their deep, deep hearts, it turned out that at some point she couldn't make the payments on her (modesty sized) family home anyway? Maybe Big Show should have had more burrito diarrhoea over Eddie's grave or something to really draw the business in.

not really sure but its pretty telling that as soon as Vickie got her college degree she put her notice in.

if this tournament were to happen again in the future, or a similar one, please consider changing the rules so that you vote for the option that you think is less bad. i feel really uncomfortable voting "for" the worst promotional tactics and it's becoming more and more of a drain on my psyche as the less-bad things are being filtered out. If you try this and it does not work out the way you like, you may go back to the original method in the third installment. if this were to end up happening, i would hope that you consider trying my way one more time in order to be certain that it isn't the better option.

Ok so devil’s advocate here. The Owen Hart thing was an accident (a preventable one, born out of recklessness and disregard, but I don’t think Vince McMahon willfully killed Owen Hart). Not paying road expenses is one of a zillion labor abuses that has benefited the company’s bottom line for years and years. So if we’re just talking “sleaziest business practices” then for sure it’s road expenses. If we’re talking “shittiest thing WWE ever did” then yeah, Owen, no question.

Labor abuse is a thing that really pisses me off and it’s insane how many things this company has done that I find more offensive than the way they exploit their workers.

remusclaw
Dec 8, 2009

I think here is where I would echo the general concern that the Owen Hart thing probably should have been consolidated into one entry. The Owen thing was straight pig headed negligence on the part of WWE and the fact that it turned out less tragically than it could have is honestly insane, but it could resulted in two fatalities if it had gone as planned so again, gently caress WWE.

Know what's something I just thought of that makes Owen's death worse? WWE learned nothing from it. They still do stunts that should be practiced and trained for in one go. I remember Sami Zayn talking about the Hell in a Cell where he saves Kevin Owens from Shane McMahon falling on him. According to Sami they didn't practice that or time it our or anything, they were just told "Oh yeah, just move when Shane starts falling". Owens death didn't convince them that they should spend money and time on the incredibly dangerous stunts they'll ask wrestlers to do. They still have them doing insane poo poo with no oversight or protection.
