Kinda surprised the USMC hasn't strapped a 105mm howitzer to the the side of a -53E yet. There was an Army proposal in the '70s to put a pair of 'em on the -47 (one could be offloaded and set up as a regular field gun.)

The idea of MV-22 gunships keeps coming up. Not sure how serious/credible they are for now. But it feels almost like a given that SOME kind of up-armed version will come to exist. I mean, Marines already made this: On top of the Hellfires on the outboard station, it carries a pair of Griffin missile tubes (left) and a magazine of up to 10 Griffin missiles (right).

Yes. But given engagement timelines, it's probably not a huge deal? It's not like Harvest Hawks are hanging out over contested beach landings. They're mostly responding to pop up targets or dudes taking cover behind rocks or armored vehicles and calling for fire. About 2 minutes into this video, you can see a two-person crew loading them up. https://vimeo.com/101432092

They hand load the 40mm and 105s on the 130Us, I assume at least still the 105s they added back to the Js too. For the Griffins to be similar isn't very surprising, especially given the HAWK gunship stuff is a roll on/roll off type deal.

Can a submarine actually hear a helicopter? Seems like that would depend on a lot of things, like the sea state, how deep the sub is, how high the helicopter is...

The inside of one of those things is big enough to make dipping the wing a pretty big fall from one side to the other. Moving around during C-130 maneuvers isn’t all that difficult. Even a 60-degree wing dip doesn’t result in that much movement within the cargo compartment, and canny crew members will always have something within arm’s reach to brace against. Plus, a high-bank turn is normally accompanied by some extra Gs, making it easier to stay put. The real danger is turbulence, which can generate negative Gs followed very quickly by the opposite. This is even worse on cargo compartment crew, especially when they’re near the paratroop doors like the pictures. The term “ping pong ball” comes to mind.

Xerxes17 posted:I notice that some are wearing a big-rear end mitten on their left hand, is this for winter protection? For the LMG gunners it's probably a heat-resistant glove that's part of their kit, for barrel swapping. For others, it's probably because the handguard on the original model of the RK 62 rifle doesn't wrap around the gastube for some big brained reason, so handling it with bare hands is really annoying.

That big-rear end mitten would be your very basic winter mitten of the FDF called ”nocando” theyre thick leather mittens with wool-fakewool insert and they are super warm and thick enough to handle a MG3 barrel after 500 rounds Or manhandling the red-hot wood burning stove out of your tent and into the snowbank when alarm gets called and tents need to disappear. Why the name? Because thats how useful they are when it comes to precision tasks like filling a magazine. You would also have fake leather gloves with inserts but individual fingered gloves can never be as warm as a mitten when it comes to real cold temperatures so wearing one-and-one keeps left hand warm while you can still actually do stuff with right until it freezes over. Also even though the gas tube top is exposed on some rk62 versions its not really reachable while holding the gun unless you have a super weird grip. Weird poo poo happening with Turkey. Either the US is trying to get them to cancel the S-400 deal, or Patriot and S-400 are going to have to learn to play...together? Along with the F-35? Whatever happens it will be awesome. Turkish article: quote:Although the Patriot missile defense systems issue was discussed earlier, the announcement came in a critical period for Turkey-U.S. relations, when the S-400 missile defense systems deal is being perceived as a looming crisis; mostly due to the discussions about the adoption of Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) and the report from the U.S. Defense Department following the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Meanwhile some other Turkish guy and the Russians insist the S-400 deal is going down no matter what. quote:Ankara's purchase of US missiles worth $3.5 billion will not affect a deal to acquire rival S-400 missiles from Russia, the Turkish presidential spokesman said Monday.

^ Yeah, I'm very nerdily looking forward to seeing how that all pans out. The timing of the Patriot deal was also the same day that the president initially said we were pulling out of Syria. I do not want to talk further about politics, but these things are inevitable and academically interesting regarding arms deals. I wish we could combine US operational capability with French video aesthetics. US naval aviation videos are so fuckin' bro mode. And they're not edited in-house by the geeky pilot/crew chief anymore; they shop a lot of the footage out to production companies that basically exist to cut together these bro-tastic videos. They have apparently not gotten the word that dubstep isn't still in fashion. Before someone points out that Skrillex still sells out concerts, even his music has changed a lot since the start of dubstep.
