oh my god thanks for explaining this, I noticed it a couple years ago and have been totally bewildered about why the UK is the terf capital of the world

I would say it seems like a moral panic over there, but then in the US we're so paranoid about the possibility of gender contamination that we've put cis women into mens' prisons over it, so

Yeah, I feel like that's probably the truth of it. Evangelicals here love exporting their bullshit because it can't win here. But why are they all so online? Like, Jesus, you figure if they were such good mums they'd not loving post so much and spend time with their kids, but they are online 24/7 getting mad at trans people.

Especially since men crossdressing has been a mainstay of British theatre and performance from as recently as Monty Python to as far back as Shakespeare and earlier. You would think that centuries of exposure to crossdressing would maybe loosen hetero-norms but apparently not at all, no

it's not like the comedy crossdressing tradition in British theater was built on respect for variant gender presentations. It was built on the idea that a man wearing a dress is extremely inherently funny

Loads of politicians do mumsnet interviews, and they're always great. When Andy Burnham was running against Corbyn they asked him what his favourite biscuit was and he said beer, chips and gravy.

Well, originally built on the idea that female actors were whores, so every female part was played by a boy/man to not offend theatergoers.

It's not an American import.

TLDR the two biggest sources are the 'skeptic' movement of the 2000s and mumsnet, which basically became freep for pearl-clutchy middle aged british women.

e: i'd also guess that it's because compared to american politics, british politics is less polarized over 'social' issues as opposed to class, so weird (to north americans) stuff like the transphobia and less prominently the anti-semitism can persist.

The Leave branch of the Tory party have gulped down the Kool-Aid on this. They've been bombarded with endless 'research' from Koch-funded think-tanks, channelled through shady funding of the DUP and UKIP, that Brexit will result in England becoming the new shining city on the hill - a libertarian paradise freed from the shackles of socialist Europe.

And since most Tory MPs are large adult fail-sons who went into politics because they weren't entrusted to manage daddy's millions, of course they're happy to sell the country to the highest bidder if it boosts daddy's shareholdings,
