This seems as good a thread to ask as any.

Is there a reason so many people being on top of a page edit their post to provide a picture or a new point in a conversation? It's like they can't just accept they hit the top of a page responding to something so they have to add new content.

Was that a punishable offense at one point or are goons just being weird?

Lots of people don't care to catch up on the 3,000th derail about whether an ephebophile is a sandwich or not and so skip a bunch of pages. You're being courteous to them by posting actual content that is relevant to the thread to get them back in.

Occasionally you get a rule of dog or some such where the first post on each page must offer up an image to the mods.

Except they even do it in threads like "post irrationally irritating movie moments"

Quote a post, elaborate on the irritating moment, then edit in something new. It's on topic and adds to the conversation. I don't get it

yeah to sum up what jobson said, it's mostly a cultural thing/goons being weird.

I think it can be traced back to when people would try to legit snipe the second or third page, which is why we have the snypa smilie. Trying to snipe on purpose was bannable IIRC, which later changed to people who tried and failed to snipe would get probated (but a successful snipe was fine), eventually it kinda morphed into the weird SA-specific courtesy we've got today

e: there's a SAclopedia on it actually: https://forums.somethingawful.com/dictionary.php?act=3&topicid=1838

looks like it was still punishable around 2010

There's a pang of guilt when you snipe a new page with some bullshit remark or continuance of an argument, basically dooming the new page to continue that argument because it's all anyone sees on first click. Courtesy says you try to keep the thread on course and edit something on-topic in

D&D (I think) went through a period where every post on the top of the page had to include a dog pic or you'd get probated or banned or something and for some it became a habit, they kept doing it to be safe, or they were casual enough that they didn't notice the rule was revoked.

Yeah especially a lot of the political threads would get heated and become real downers, so there was a rule to put cute pictures in as a tax to keep things from getting too depressing

It started in the first Trump thread which was moving so fast the mods couldn’t keep up. So they said “you have to post a fat dog if you start a new page” to try to put the fear of god into people.

Then people noticed that fat dog pictures were kind of a limited content source, plus it led to a whole thing about whether fat dog pics amounted to animal abuse, so it turned into just regular dog pics.

Then, as with the experiment with the monkeys and the bananas in the ladder, eventually everyone in every thread started to absorb the idea that every thread should have a dog tax at the start of every page. It’s cute and fun enough that nobody minds.

Also generally the bottom post of each page gets less read than the top post does.

Auspol was doing this before Trump was a thing so it goes back even further.

I guess it's just a shame thing about posting quality instead of poo poo, so being first post on a page with some lame quote and joke makes it feel wasted.
It also starts conversations rather than kills them.

In the non-SA context, maybe because content isn't necessarily displayed chronologically starting with oldest anymore; you generally see most recent first or most-[like equivalent]

auspol arbitrarily and vicously being bombed with several pages of my little pony prolapse porn drastically improved the thread imo, even if xylo or whoever else got stuck with going through and editing out all the posts disagrees with me

An absolute horror show of a Pokemon romhack inspired it.

Highlights include:

  • Entering the region via train crash
  • In game suicides being inspired by real life events
  • Repeated shock therapy on orphans
  • Gym Leader suicide leading to the badge you just earned being null and void
  • Plot items being taking from you with no struggle.
  • Winning battles only for your effort to never make any impact

And many more problems because the game just keeps introducing more and more characters relentlessly and damned if I can remember eight people at a time. I mean look at this nonsense https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3856521&pagenumber=225&perpage=40#post490759494
