I've just gotten into vanilla for a bit and want to try out some mods. I tried out this one https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1222324217&searchtext=general

Would this work with the economy mod? Or does the general mod fix most of the same things economy-wise? Sorry, I feel stupid about this

Things could be going better

Bought this over the break and have put several hours in, running around the deserts in the NE and trying not to be eaten by bugs or slavers. Good times.

Two questions

1. Does everyone need a round on a training dummy to get anyone into fighting shape?

2. What is the best way to speed up loading times? Feels like if I start splitting up the party I will be doing a lot of loading.

1. Training dummies have a limit in an unmodded game, mk 1 is 5 attack and mk3 is 15. In my experience, it wasn't worth it to train on those aside from the early game where you can train in the shinobi tower.
2. There is an option in the options menu that allows the game to load from each character in your squad, ie if you have a person running trade goods apart from your main party, the game will be loading the rough terrain around them but not the fine details. It helps but you need a decent system.

Dark UI feels mandatory.

In-Game Biome Map is also either mandatory or an unfathomable spoiler

Everything else is a bridge you can cross after you have some context with the game.

i feel like i've gotten the hang of the game in general but even on my really very powerful machine it runs like corrugated butthole. all i'm doing is running a liquor trading ring across a few regions and stealing poo poo and i still drop down to 3 FPS pretty often. i think i'll let this game have another 6 months in the oven to hopefully get some optimizations, or at the very worst to let computers beat the pants off of its requirements a little more, because man is it hard to play like this.

If its random framerate crashes have you turned shadows off? That's the usual culprit.

If its chunk loading (loading bar appears top right) there's settings you can fiddle with to load more chunks at once and keep chunks loaded for all squads but its not smart enough to cap it off before you load more than you have space for and the thing crashes. Assume an SSD also helps with this.

Trip report:

I loaded into the world, into some town after making a dude that looks like me. Within seconds, random dudes are all fighting. Seeing this as a solid opportunity to loot a corpse, I figure out how to make my dude run, and then loot. As I'm looting, something just wails on my chest until I'm unconscious and then dying. No random passerby would heal me, so after 5 minutes of reading the tutorials I exited. I will fire the game back up in a few.

You got really unlucky. Having a second party member to heal the other up is a good idea. Often I'll leave one guy out of a fight I think I might lose for this reason, even with larger groups.

Turn your settings and draw distance down. I get like 80-100 fps even with people spread out over multiple regions, there's also mods that lower the amount of grass and clutter in the world that help too.

I wish he'd just get rid of the grass and pebbles entirely. The performance hit for how little they add to the game is terrible

Update: Found a partner. She's better than me in every way and now I realize how slowly my main dude moves.

Also, I apparently, at some point, befriended a bandit faction in The Hub and they have sworn to protect me for 4000 days. I had no clue this was a thing, and the group of them seem to have died, with the exception of one, who belly crawls all around following me and telling me to gently caress off when I try to interact with him.

So I decided to tell the Shek to gently caress off when they came for my food, then kicked their rear end when they came back for a fight. Seemed good!

Unfortunately it seems this sets off a pattern of ever increasingly large groups of Shek warriors coming to fight you, the last one included multiple of their Hundred Guardian badasses who have discovered the secret art of wearing shirts and are thus much harder to take down even in addition to their 70+ combat skills. I barely eaked out a victory thanks to still having a pile of United Cities Samauri hanging around following a Holy Nation raid but now literally every member of my town is mangled and I had to dip into my stockpile of cybernetic limbs.

I can only assume that things keep escalating and that the next raid is going to be even worse. I have a dozen people wearing full specialist Samauri armour and armed with Edge or Meitou weapons but absolutely cannot match the skill levels of elite Shek beyond maybe two characters. Is the only answer intensive practice with captured 'training dummies'?

Edit: Also if you are powerful or sneaky enough then I have to recommend slave liberation raids. I freed everyone in two Holy Mines and got not just a fair bit of money from the loot (the second mine had tens of thousands in silver cups and stuff in a locked chest) but also two people who joined me and had 15+ in every stat. A good step up from the average bar recruit! I also got to read the story of how Little Timmy was Mangled by Skeletons.

I've had good experiences using a small crossbow team of 3-5 people. With masterwork eagles or mkii bows they do some serious damage and can take out hard targets. Just need to manually maneuver them a bit so you don't blast your own tank dudes in the back, those eagles hurt like hell.

good god the people in Shark seriously do just kick the poo poo out of each other full time. i have been running a triangle trade of cactus rum to Shark, sake to united cities, and grog back to hub for more rum. I rolled into Shark and for the third loving time there is a massive street fight going on and now the bartender and one of the traders are loving dead. on one hand that’s ok because I bought a shack in town and looted everything into some storage chests but on the other where the gently caress am I gonna get my sake now

You can import your save to bring them back if you don't won't to roll with it.

If you want to try your hand at a base the edge of the swamp and the desert regions you can grow Riceweed, Cactus, and Wheetstraw all in one base. Lets you produce Grog, rum and Sake all in one base.

I'm set up at the SW of the Shem, in an area with Iron, copper, Stone, and water.

how do they work?
I would like it if the one change they made was to make the traders in shark belong to the traders guild or something. Them constantly dying is the one reason I won't hang out there.

Or just make them Hounds, gently caress it the Hounds always win anyway.

More Bounties is a nice mod. It gives some of the regular enemies a chance to have a bounty on them. So for instance normal dust bandits have a small chance of having a bounty of ~600 cats on them and dust bandit bosses have a greater chance of having a bounty of ~3000 cats.

After a few aborted starts I realized I wanted to begin the game with a larger group and level up their combat stats together before doing anything else. I chose an all Shek Freedom Seekers start and led by the old soldier went to the Borderlands to train on bandits. On the way I couldn't resist picking up the lady Shek who had her horns cut off so my group grew to 7. Such a large group is hard to keep fed though so I had to do alot of copper mining inbetween getting wrecked by bandits. But now that my team is strong enough to take out groups of dust bandits I should be able to stockpile mats and keep the pantry full on bounties and bandit loot alone. Feels good and I'll probably be ready to start a settlement soon.

I started a new game (Rebirth start) and managed to get out of there with six total guys. My two, and four other slaves who made it in the mad dash. Picked up two more at Moll's hideout along with burn and declared war on the holy nation with her. Then tried to run south through holy nation poo poo to get to Hub and the shek lands. Didn't realize loving cannibals came all the way down to the holy farms on the east side of world's end and had to train two groups of the fuckers into a paladin patrol. Paladins helpfully kicked everyone's asses before moving on. Fortunately had three people make it out so they could come back and bandage everyone and confiscate cannibal weapons/put them back into the dirt when they got up. Made it minus an arm and a leg, which I guess isn't too bad.

I actually had three people with masterwork bows and two people on double barreled harpoon turrets, but there were so many Shek they mobbed and surrounded my melee fighters before a half dozen or more split off to then chop up my crossbow people on the wall. I could probably have micromanaged them to run away, at least the crossbow types given they have 70+ athletics, but they ended up being caught and mangled. One actually had his arm chopped off through his specialist grade plated jacket.

This was a huge escalation from the previous attack, I had 20ish United Cities samurai hanging around in addition to my own guys, a sergeant, ten or so scouts and regular samauri plus a dozen conscripts. I think only two of them were left standing by the time the last Shek went down.

Is locking prisoners in a cage and letting them out for daily beatings really the best way to level combat? It is definitely effective but it takes so long and is kind of boring.

I would send my dudes out to fight random mobs but they generally get their assess kicked. Which is kind of the point, but I also have said mobs just kind of hang around my dudes as they bleed out in the sand. I had to save scum when a bunch of dudes raided my outpost and took my guys down, but I couldn't rescue them because every dude has one or two strong enemies just staring at their comatose bodies as they bled out.

Not looking to be instantly powerful, but training people up from low stats is a nightmare. This game is crying out for a sparring option.

I'm realizing the sparring prisoners is just the most hands off. It's like the copper mining of skill gain.

Toughness really takes off when you can stand up near enemies and while you can eventually capture enough prisoners to do this from the comfort of your home, it's easier early on to roam around looking for hungry bandits, and kill two birds with one stone by doing this while you take sellable goods to market or visit an equipment store to rob them blind. Once you have toughness your armor starts actually working and you can get weapon skills before succumbing to 4 whacks of an iron bar and sooner than you know it you have a perfectly mediocre samurai or ninja.

I found that making a base in Skinner's Roam was helpful for a first real base. My spot had no taxmen, ninja raids from the black dragon clan with ~30 stats dudes every so often, and massive bands of starving guys to train the weakest with. I think I migrated there from the Hub once I had about 15 or so guys, ranging from 1-25 stats, gotten from fighting dust bandits and various excursions. I stole for my wealth though, training from Shek land to the Hub. It's a solid central location that allows for somewhat easy travel to most anywhere.
