Hey, look. Look, if- if you screw me on this, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, you rat bastard!
There was a PC game called Drowned God around the late 90s,maybe early 00s that had an ad that just featured a bathroom toilet and microphone covered with a condom and some text explaining how the combination there of was used to create sounds for a game.

edit: Looking up the game on wiki, this gem came up:
" Around the time of the game's release, Horse stated that its story was incomplete, and that the rest of the story would be revealed in a sequel called CULT,[3] planned to center around Area 51.[12] However, he killed himself, as well as his wife and pets, a decade after the game's release,[16] and no sequel was ever completed."

God that was such a loving disgusting commercial. I remember having to sit through it like 20 times a day for like 3 months leading into the holidays.

Not even the Earthworm Jim commercial can top it.

I remember an old Heat.net ad from a gaming magazine in 2000 or 2001 that had two fat people in a pool hugging each other. On it was their screen names and a factoid about each of them. One of them was, "This is not <name>."

EDIT: It took me a while, but I found it in an archived copy of Computer Gaming World. I was wrong a bit about the text, but the punchline is the same.

Exploration is ill-advised.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of video game advertising of that era was outsourced to marketing firms who had only a vague at best idea of what a video game was and also likely no idea how to advertise to what they presumed their target market was.

get that OUT of my face posted:

Gex might have been the most '90s video game series ever created. the gameplay has aged as horribly as the concept of a gecko with attitude. at least it introduced me to Dana Gould, although it's only been recently where he's made things that were any good (namely, his podcast and Stan Against Evil)

gex 2 literally ended with gex going to gently caress the girl from the pandemonium series (i think?) and a joke about how long his tongue is so the ad is honestly the most accurate to the gameplay contents of everything posted there

you can actually inflate your scrote pretty safely with sterile saline, syringes, needles, and aseptic technique. its a niche kink iirc

the saline just slowly gets absorbed into your blood but in the meantime you got a big round smooth distended nutsack

before i had my own pc to look at porn on, it was video game magazines and newspaper underwear ads as far as the eye could see

The 90s in general was a weird, edgy, juvenile and frequently unpleasant era for advertising. I mean, it's where 'edgy' basically got started.

Was kinda funny comparing the advertising to the actual game content which is universally pretty tame even by the standards of its time.
Not that long ago I was asking myself if the 90s was a uniquely adolescent decade, or if I was just thinking that because I was an adolescent in the 90s.

So I went back and read some old issues of Computer Gaming World, and holy gently caress, the ads...

The game's multiplayer mod where you had to protect your base by placing traps and defenses and AI controlled guards and attackers was actually quite fun, but good luck finding someone to play against since the multiplayer scene was dead from pretty much the release.

I remember in Mega Man Legends... 2? I think? there's a quiz part and one of the answers is Hungry Like the Wolf and I've never felt more taken out of a game.

Mega Man and Roll, lighting a spliff and listening to some Duran Duran.

I miss the mod era of like dod, firearms, action quake 2, the professionals, that vampire hunter one in half life etc and the endless supply of stuff on planethalflife or planetquake and that's how i ended up on SA originally in the early 2000s. My friends and i still play AQ2 and Urban Terror sometimes but the days where those kind of releases were coming out quicker than you could play them and had such huge followings ruled and i struggle to explain it to younger relatives. I must have tried dozens of mods that never got out of alpha testing that always had someone to play with 24 hours a day or had full on single player campaigns (THEY HUNGER) and even the biggest projects for like Skyrim or something don't have that same feeling despite being more professionally made. As good as natural selection 2 is my best memories are all from the early hl1 mod days even.

Unreal Tournament was awesome for this too. Jailbreak, Carball (which rocket league completely stole and gave no credit), ActionUT, TacOps, etc etc. Too bad those days are dead.

With answers like that I bet it was changed from something super Japanese in the original. And the setting is pretty far gone post-apocalypse.

80s was a very plastic/futuristic/fake but still serious and computer games could be advertised by and too people wearing button up shirts and ties, then it flipped in a big rebellious way for the 90s.

I bought a games magazine when I was not holiday in Florida and I distinctly remember an ad that was a full page picture of vomit containing alphabeti spaghetti. The letters spelled out "I'm so excited I think going to...". There was another Nintendo ad specifically slagging off Sega (it was slagging off bad graphics or something and said "hint, rhymes with schmega"). I remember thinking at the time that you'd never get ads like that in the UK. They were juvenile, but not full on gross out, and never specifically mentioning competitors.

The whole Jeopardy-loving family came into the room to help me with that quiz, with someone on internet duty when we weren't 100% sure. That question nearly ended the run because the person on the computer didn't know how to shut down Net Nanny.
