The Republicans are already experimenting with fascism so you might as well counter it with socialism you're certainly not going to win with economic liberalism

no argument here, especially at the grassroots level to build up a credible political infrastructure. i'm just throwing cold water on the notion that a poor white republican who's finally sick of being screwed by team free market would necessarily run to bernie. for people who've already demonstrated they have zero moral attachment to anti-racism, i don't know how you counter the pitch, "more than what that guy promises to you, none of what he promises to brown people"

rural whites liked third way Democrats because third-way Democrats framed their welfare reforms as punishing the "lazy" and rewarding the "hard-working". The whole point of welfare reform was to link government assistance to work to appease racial resentment on the part of rural whites who saw welfare as rewarding Cadillac driving welfare queens. Rural white America hates the "unvirtuous" poor below them as much as the coastal elites above them.

bill clinton was popular in rural america, and continued to be all the way up to maybe 2016 if not today. Rural America is not some hotspring of leftism just waiting for a socialist savior to come along.

It’s incredibly rare for anything worth a drat to come up for a vote at all because our political system is broken beyond believe, so I’m not sure you can really say this. But progressive referendums did pretty drat good this past cycle, even in states with otherwise lovely politics.

I was thinking the same thing. I’d really love to see someone ask Trump if he plans to significantly cut the budgets of border patrol and ICE if his wall gets built, since obviously they won’t be nearly as necessary.

For that matter, how exactly does an immobile object that can be beaten by a ladder make the country secure? Or a pickaxe? You would still need people to patrol the border, except now there's a bloody big wall blocking their view.

the ideal way to appeal to rural america would be:

1) socially conservative (rural america is pretty religious)

2) government program + "personal responsibility" requirements to filter out the "lazy" (welfare discourages "hard work")

3) THE WALL

so basically exactly what Trump would be doing if he wasn't moored to the Paul Ryan type Republicans who would never ever fork over the cash for 2)

(as i've noted before, trump broke with GOP orthodoxy in the 2016 campaign by saying he wanted to strengthen medicare and social security. he also ran the most overtly racist campaign of recent memory. im convinced the latter helped his struggling voters support the former.)

also, no offense to bernie but polling changes drastically once you're taken seriously enough to be subjected to attack ads and smear campaigns. dem primaries are easy mode cuz the winner can't afford to fracture party unity in the general

It really doesn't make much sense in the metaphor which makes it much funnier that its true irl. You can't look at polling on policies and actual government policies, comparing the two, and think that voting is a path out of the current situation. It really is that simple imo.

but it could be argued that even if you think voting doesn't matter in directly impacting policy, obviously someone like Bernie Sanders owed his rise to the 2016 elections

even if the end game you are proposing is a Communist revolution, that still gonna be a watershed moment leading up to whatever left-wing revolution you are imagining

Have you looked at the cities? They've left the majority population of the cities to rot as well. Where homelessness booms, most of the apartments are actually empty, but rent keeps going up and up and up and maybe you're lucky you got a dollar raise this year. We think the cities are doing fine cause they show you The Upper West Side, they don't show you East New York

I'm not imagining any revolution, just that movements of people are more important than electing any particular representative. (e: tho maybe I am since this seems contradictory :smugdon:) Also that there needs to be a serious attacks on the nature of voting in this country if anything is to really change. Not gonna have pro-poor policies when voting is gated by class along with whatever the hell else.

I would agree with this point, in the sense that I think on the long run changing public opinion on economics matters more than any given election, but don't you think electing individual representatives serves as a useful rallying point for mass movements?

Human beings seem inherently drawn to leaders more than ideas themselves after all, you need human avatars to embody your ideas to move them forward
