Good update, sigtrap. Welcome back. Sounds like a lot of progress going on there. Well done.

I've been messing around with some of these TPU filaments, and thought that I should finally make a cup/base for my hydroflask-alike. I dropped it a few months ago and it hasn't sat level on the table since, but a carefully designed sleeve fixed that. Fits perfectly on the first try. Also there are seven rows of 52 "pips" going around. Just squishy enough to keep it from banging on the table, and to give it a good grip, but not "sticky" like silicone sleeves that inevitably get caught inside a backpack or similar.

I haven't tried that, I saw there's some very rubbery filament you can get, but that seems a lot stiffer?Bajaha posted:So the Aston's been that unreliable eh? Should buy one of those reliable imports, like a Honda, or Toyota.

For those looking for a screaming HDD deal https://bit.ly/2R6cLfK 8TB Easy Store at Best Buy for $130. Crack the case and it's a WD Red that sells for 2x that. Note that they are using white stickers now on the internal drives instead of the 'red' labels. People were selling them on ebays as Reds and profiting.

I've shucked a dozen of those, I had to tape off power pins on the newer ones to get them to spin up. Just a heads up, but super good deal

I just bought four of the $180 10TB drives. Slightly higher price per GB but I'm limited to eight drives total on my main server.

Wish I had some money after Christmas. I could use a couple of the drives as they are on my media server (which is a Mac Mini, so no extra internal bays) to replace the 6TB LaCie RAID 5 (4 x 2TB drives). I don't really need more space, but those arrays are physically big. Then again, the two LaCies with the Mac Mini on top of them are still smaller than most minitowers. Hmmm. I need to check the docs on the LaCie enclosures. They may be able to do hardware RAID 10. Which I've wanted to do since I learned RAID 5 wasn't all that great.

I don't feel like looking it up now, but it has to do with your PSU and which pins it supplies power to for the SATA connectors. Something about old PSUs supplying power to the 3.3v rails and the new drives being put into the sleep state due to this

Speaking of video storage does anyone have a favorite program to rip my DVDs to digital so I can put them all on a ssd? It's time to setup my living room again now that my roommate is gone and finally setup a media server in my house for movies and music.

There's this upscaling program called rarbg that's pretty good. Helps you convert DVDs to higher quality mp4s.

I rather like Handbrake for DVDs, and MakeMKV for Blu-ray. Or MakeMKV for both. Handbrake used to be able to do Blu-ray, but the add-ones don’t seem to work reliably any more, or are just a pain to make work. MakeMKV requires a license, however, it’s still in beta, so the license is free from the forum. It just has to be re-entered every month.

With DVDs and appropriate software you can fit a visually-identical copy of the video into a much smaller space using x264 or x265 codecs. I use Handbrake myself.

Once you tie plex into Sonaar and Radaar, its hunger for storage space gets stupid. And we need to change out some more drives because they're starting to hit capacity!

I have a legit payed for Windows 7, Photoshop and Office so every time I wipe a hard drive or build a new computer there is no hassle. I'm not dumb but also not proficient with computers so I like stuff that just works. IOwnCalculus posted:You can't increase the resolution above the source.
