Thanks guys, I appreciate the offer, but we're fine - we had flood insurance, so everything was covered. It's just down to the nitpicky details now. We'd been doing a little remodeling anyway, we just didn't plan on doing the whole house at once! I dug out a couple of smallish wine glasses last night, so I think I'll give those a whirl today.

We'd been doing a little remodeling anyway, we just didn't plan on doing the whole house at once! Floods are an enormous pain in the rear end. Our condo flooded in January a few years back courtesy of our upstairs neighbor's hot water heater. Mrs. Doctor and I moved into a hotel room with our almost 2 year old for 101 days while our whole place was gutted and rebuilt. Then four months after we moved into a standalone house, our entire city flooded. I saved all of my books by finally unpacking them out of my basement the weekend before the storm hit. To bring things back around to the topic at hand: I've had a bottle Black Bush I intended to open on election night but Nate Silver's live projection model losing its goddamned mind put me out of the mood for any nice booze. It's still sitting, unopened, in my cabinet of vice. I would have cracked it for New Year's Eve but my Dad brought over his bottle of Green Spot instead.

Nth Doctor posted:Floods are an enormous pain in the rear end. I'll heartily second that. We were living at my parents' house for 4 months before we got back in. It was okay because they were out of state the whole time (I love them dearly but it was nice to have the space!), and they have a hot tub. Our dog still likes their house better. Glass talk - any suggestions for getting glassware that's not obscenely expensive? I'd probably get a couple of Glencairn glasses, in addition to a few rocks glasses. In addition to the usual water glasses for every day use.

These are wonderful: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ATV2Q5Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's a very versatile cup that's good for however you enjoy whiskey, but my favorite part is that it's a tulip cup that isn't awkward to sip with when your drink is low (unlike the Glencairn or the Norlan glasses.)

I have a pair of fancy Polish hand cut lead crystal glasses that were a gift from my mom, and I've never used them because I can't get past the lead content in the glasses. I know it's not really a thing to be worried about, but I've got plenty of glasses to drink booze with so they can stay decorative items only.

It should be either single barrel or small batch, not both. 2) worth picking up if it's ~$70 or less and you like Four Roses 3) love this stuff and would grab it if this is your only chance 4) Hard pass for me. Their rye and cask strength are wildly overpriced, but if you want to try their entry level stuff (4 y/o, port-finished, sourced bourbon) then go for it. The bottle is very nice!

Both #1 and #2 (my personal favorite) are excellent and should run < $50. If you like Blantons you will likely enjoy the Four Roses, which I prefer. Both are high rye/spicier types of bourbon. Knob Creek is a sweeter, basic but balanced bourbon, but at 120 proof it’s a flavor bomb, in a good way. Dunno about #3. For #4, I haven’t tried the AE regular stuff but having had the cask strength (which thank god I didn’t pay for) I’d be inclined to pass on anything from AE. Took a break from my diet last night to do some eating and drinking with a friend. I made a Manhattan with Noilly Prat Rouge, Angustora bitters and Knob Creek Cask Strength Rye. I then had a little straight pours of Barrell 15 year, George T Stagg and Old Forester 1920. I met my buddy at a restaurant and got a pour of their best bourbon Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. The pour was pretty huge. It had to be 4 oz. Then had a Makers Old Fashioned at the end of dinner. I got back home and made myself a Buffalo Trace bourbon cream and root beer with a side of a little Stagg Jr. This morning I was praying for death.

I look like I can lift very heavy things (I can) but also only run 10 meters (I guess). I quite like drinking whiskey because so long as I don't go too nuts with it I'm basically completely fine the morning after. Not the case with wine which gets me ungodly ill after even relatively small amounts.

Cadenhead is my new kink. I knew nothing about the shop. It was recommended by my buddy. I have since looked into it. Here's a brief summary: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/icons-of-whiskey-retailin_b_11004776 The stuff these guys have selected and bottled has been some of the tastiest I have ever tried. I walked out with the 12yr Blended and the 9yr Islay, as well as a 250ml Lowland bottle. I traded the 250ml lowland bottle for a fifth of The Dalmore (which is simply delightful) and we had a nice tasting of each. Scotland treated me kindly drink-wise. Anyone else mess around with The Dalmore? The most startling thing I noticed was how the nose was all honey, but the last of the taste remained peaty. Top notch, checks off all my slow sippin-whiskey boxes. gently caress Monkey Shoulder though. I can't believe people drink that swill.

Do bourbon collectors tend to care about errors on labels of the bottle? I grabbed 2 bottles of Stagg Jr and the little label on the front that lists the proof was applied upside down on one of them. If it doesn't matter I'll just drink it, but if I could swap it for something with a collector that would be cool too.

I have a bottle of Dalmore port wood reserve to try still, but that’s not as high proof. I’m visiting my in laws this weekend so I’m going to do some bourbon/whisky scouting down there. Probably won’t find much, but you never know!
