a lot of people who watch anime just watch every anime regardless of quality, especially if it's controversial or just talked about a lot, so that's a component as well but people who build their identity around being "Anime Watchers" are just like people who build their identity around being "Gamers" which is why anime fans seem so chuddy because most of them are just dudes who have nothing going on in their lives but watching anime
