Shop around for doctors! Always fucking shop for doctors. Doctors are stupid assholes. And they get by because people are cowed by their mystical bullshit quality of being able to maintain a 3.0 GPA at some Guatemalan medical college for 3 semesters. Find one that makes sense.
I would imagine that any serious gov takeover of PGE would leave it largely intact, at least initially. We wouldn't nationalize it and then fire half the workers.

When you consider the unfunded and poorly maintained state of the infrastructure buying out PG&E should be considered a net liability to California and investors should get nothing if the company is taken over by the state.

There are likely billions of dollars in projects just under the “do this to prevent a massive disaster” list without getting to the “do this or someone might die” list. Someone has to pay for them and at the end of the day the state is the only entity with the potential will and capacity to do so.

For real I'd do a full 180 on my opinions wrt Gavin if he gets behind a PG&E nationalization effort.

What's the legal precedent, if any, for nationalization of private utilities? I'd expect legal challenges from PG&E and the Trump WH at a minimum, and since they'd eventually float up to arguably the most conservative SCOTUS in living memory, I figure this would have to be some written in stone "the state has the power to do this shut up" stuff or Roberts and his pro-corporation cronies will find a loophole.

I think the only likely nationalization statilization would be from bailing out an unprofitable company, but that would require the CPUC to stop guaranteeing a profit

If California pulled the rug out from PG&E it would go under in a month and be begging for Sacramento to nationalize it by the end of the quarter.

The CPUC is deciding what to do about PG&E, and proposals include "should PG&E’s natural gas and electric distribution and transmission divisions be split into separate companies controlled by a holding company", "should the CPUC revoke holding company authorization so PG&E is exclusively a regulated utility", and "should some or all of PG&E be reconstituted as a publicly owned utility or utilities". I think the likely scenario is "no" to all the above, but there is quite a bit of anger at PG&E right now so who knows.

What does this box do?
So thought I'd mention something here that may not be on many peoples' radar because it gets into arcane party politics: the ADEMs (Assembly District Election meetings).
  • Since CA is kind of a one-party state, and with the open primaries as well, the CA Democratic party endorsement is kind of a big deal. The establishment can stack the deck with a party endorsement and access to mailing lists and all kinds of advantages to make sure their chosen guy is more likely to win. That sort of thing is decided by the Democratic State Central Committee (DSCC) Delegates, which also decides other stuff like the party officers and regional directors, the other ballot endorsements, attends the state convention and votes on the platform, etc.
  • The DSCC, as you might expect, is moderately stacked with existing party apparatchiks... but part of the membership comes from the Assembly District Delegates (ADD)
  • The ADD is elected at the ADEM elections once every two years - they are happening January 12/13/26/27 (look up the correct date in the above link, it varies by Assembly district). This will have an effect on the party behavior for the 2020 elections.
  • The rules for how ADEM delegates get elected is a little arcane (since it's trying to make it hard for everyone but the establishment), but ultimately you need to be a registered Dem voter in the appropriate Assembly District (check here), and you vote for a slate of candidates. That slate needs to achieve a certain vote threshold totaled between them.

So why am I bringing this up, if the deck's already stacked somewhat against progressives and newcomers? Well, these are local races that can pack the most punch in results per activist, and the DSA in some of those areas is making a push to support progressive ADEM slates. It can sometimes take a few hundred votes, roughly, which is within the realm of possibility when coordinating with local progressive groups.

Even if the effect isn't big at a statewide level, enough influence could be exerted to at least deny party endorsements to lovely Democrats in the Assembly Districts, which are smaller races where the endorsement counts for more. Example: anti single-payer Dems like Marc Berman (AD24). Additionally, there's a chance to exert pressure on the party leadership and potentially cause some turnover, as the chair Eric Bauman (not the ebaumsworld guy) had to resign due to sexual assault. Some of the current officers are the ones that looked the other way.

Fun Fact: Since this is an internal party thing, there are little to no rules for election finance. No money limits, no rules about canvassing while people are literally in line to vote, and the establishment likes to pull fun little tricks like treating a bunch of voters from some interest group to a luncheon that oh, hey, is coincidentally next door to this little election meeting! Let's take a short break after the meal to go over and vote!

TL;DR: Registered Dem in CA? Check if any local groups are endorsing ADEM slates. Then bring yourselves (and a bunch of friends) to the election on a weekend in January and start cutting off lovely candidates and maybe even infiltrate some socialists into the party

Complaints about the DMV just indicate that people haven't been forced to use the privatized DMVs that some states have, which are universally awful, dysfunctional, expensive, and slow.

Also I've usually had ok experiences with the DMV, so long as I have an appointment.

California still has top in the nation higher education, it's actually the K-12 schools where the state is a joke. It's a travesty that schools in deep red states are on average having much better educational results for the children there than here in California.

Having healthcare system run like UC would be something like

- Good quality doctors
- Hiring part time contractor nurses to replace the doctors when they retire
- Exponential growth of co-pays to the point that going to a private doctor is about the same
- Bloated self-congratulating administration
- A Board of Directors manned entirely by pharma insiders
- Somehow pepper spraying an entire ward of leukemia kids

The tuition prices are astronomically skyrocketing absolutely everywhere in the country. The in-state UC tuition prices are around average with the other top public schools.

On the university level California has a bunch of extremely respected schools, though Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA and Cal Tech are the most famous. Almost all the UC's are pretty respected, and depending on the field exceptionally so.

yeah pretty much, anyone whose saying california university/schools are failing is out of their loving mind. I even went to UC Davis and it's really some of the top and highly respected for a lot of fields (veterinary, medicine, civil engineering, and several other things like that, and really good in general). It's not a problem with quality of education, they're all generally more respected and looks better on resumes than most other states', it's just the tuition has really gone up something fierce (as have the rest of the country though!) which is destroying access to education and general culture of the colleges.

what they want is a special section at the dmv where you can pay 50 to a couple hundred bucks to jump the line, which is not at all incompatible with cutting the funding to make the standard process unbearably shittier

I made an appointment for realID in October and got one like middle of November on a saturday (El Cerrito dmv). Maybe saturday appointments are not desirable but I would think that's the hottest time slot. so about a 1.5 month wait for a Saturday appointment was pretty drat reasonable for me.

I will say the process was kinda lovely but that might have been a layout/communication issue. like there was a long line that says APPOINTMENTS when we walked in the door, so we stood in that for like 15+ minutes but it turns out hidden around that corner is a line to do some computer stuff where you can enter info for the realid then they give you a number which you then wait to go up to talk to someone when called. So we wouldn't have had to wait in this weird initial line that says appointments only for no reason, idk.
