when i lived at a complex with a mail kiosk it was so weird to like, pick up your mail while the guy was cramming shop adverts and inserts and junk mail inside the boxes and then dumping yours in the trash can that's stuffed full of junk mail. if you start thinking about how much carbon is involved you might get insanely depressed

also Bill Bryson is kind of a poo poo but his books are great because theyre that exact kind of idle wonderment about stupid things that was probably more common before Wikipedia became a thing, so he actually had to go talk to some dude at a museum to find out why the front door of a house opens into the "hall"
