I could never get in to black mirror because the episodes are all (i think) 100% standalone. I watched a couple episodes and didn't hate it, but I felt no motivation to watch more knowing that hte next plot would be pretty much entirely different. I need a long-term plotline across at least a season to really get me hooked on a show.

"IT WAS DARK MAGIC!" is the answer, but if you can't just enjoy listening to David Lynch talk in all caps all the time, well that's deeply unfortunate. Also the dialogue for the mob guys in the last season is written like a Cohen film, which I also enjoy.

Also, I understand not liking the first two episodes of Black Mirror, the first one didn't even exacerbate my ongoing existential crisis. The rest of the series though. Hoo boy.

Black Mirror's longterm plot is that we live in it and it's coming true rapidly, technological advances' promises of a more comfortable and brighter future turned out to be like the promises of steady, well-paid and safe working conditions overseas for young women born into poverty in the official third-world.

The problem with Black Mirror is that you can't just keep saying "thing bad" over and over again. It's like that The John Oliver Show. Every episode he goes in depth about some thing that's bad in the world. And the next week it's a different bad thing. and a different thing the next week and so on.

Eventually you need to synthesize all those separate criticisms into a holistic critique of society, and present a positive alternative.

If you don't, if you just keep saying "thing bad" every week, all you're doing is misery porn. It's just a way for people to go yeah the world sucks and then get on with existing in the suck world without thinking about why the world sucks or what better worlds are possible.

Yeah basically every last week tonight episode is John Oliver showing a clip, then saying "that is horrifying". Well, yeah, but would it kill you to at least make a joke about it? The long segments he does are marginally educational, but they could be much more if he stopped insisting on reminding everyone how outraged he is and how much we should be. It always feels like I'm being lectured for not inciting a revolution or whatever every time certain things we aren't allowed to talk about ITT happen.

I have no idea who John Oliver's audience is supposed to be. If you're already familiar with the topic, it feels like you're being talked down to. If you're not familiar with the topic, it's interesting and vaguely entertaining... but if you're watching John Oliver you're probably already tuned in to a lot of the things discussed on the show.

Like most political comedy the audience is people who already agree and like having their opinions supported while also learning a little bit.

Nah, the problem with Black Mirror is that it only appears clever on the surface. It's well made, but it doesn't hold up to scrutiny, and unfortunately the type of show it's trying to be invites scrutiny. Compare it to Electric Dreams. Electric Dreams works much better because it starts out by going "OK, so this is some weird magic or something, don't think of it as a realistic scenario" whereas Black Mirror is constantly raising its eyebrows at you and going "You know this could really happen, right? Think about it. Isn't this basically what's happening already?" But it isn't basically what's happening already and in fact it's wildly implausible.

I like John Oliver but that is incredibly accurate.

One of the very best Black Mirror stories (San Junipero) is also one of the few optimistic episodes so that would be good to start with, alongside the decidedly less-happy offerings like White Bear and Fifteen Million Merits.

15 Million Merits is what we're living in realtime, just with daylight and homeless people.
Black Mirror doesn't NEED to spoonfeed its audience the conclusions that this poo poo is horrific, the target audience can figure it out and draw their own parallels and conclusions.

John Oliver is bad because he specifically doesn't want to draw parallels or conclusions because it would offend his paymasters and therefore disrupt his revenue streams. I like his segments as a sort of book report on X topic, and I did learn something new about the topic in question back when I would watch them.

Frankly, any factual reporting on ongoing societal problems is gonna feel like an admonishment for not firing the first bullet in the revolution, because this poo poo is so completely hosed and anyone with any power to actually change it even a little benefits from it entirely too much to ever consider rocking the boat, even as it guarantees their own grandchildren will eventually suffer.

Imo Oliver is better when he’s covering non-current-eventy topics that you might not know much about- like his segments on the 911 emergency system being broken, or exploitation of college athletes. When he’s just the fifteenth liberal man in a suit on TV going TRUMP BAD GAYS GOOD COPS PROBLEMATIC then he’s forgettable. Also he has the same problem that the most of the whole Daily Show cohort (Stuart, Colbert, Hodgman, Bee, etc) where even though I agree with them most of the time they come off as kind of unrelateable and privileged.

Also, I got like an hour into the new Black Mirror movie before realizing it was a CYOA. But that concept is really fun and I hope netflix runs with it.

It should be more acceptable/encouraged to completely disconnect from the internet once in a while. In reality, if you tell someone you are taking an internet break for a couple weeks or so, people freak out and assume you are going to off yourself or are somehow in danger or something and threaten to call the cops if you don't check in, or at least take it super personally. It's hard to deal with stressful things if you have no escape to go relax and think things through.

Just let people have their space sometimes. They will be fine if you don't check in with them every 24 hours, honestly.

Here's a real doozy.

I believe that advanced statistics are one of the worst things to ever happen to baseball, and it's been worse for the game's popularity than the 1994 players' strike. Specifically, I think the unintended consequences of analytics are what's bad- the worthy goal of understanding players better has led to longer games, screwing free agents out of money due to the prime years of a baseball player skewing younger (and young players are stuck to the team that drafted and developed them until they're past their early prime years), and making discussion of baseball feel like you've wandered into a college statistics course.
