vmware is more of the same poo poo. you could do all this in freebsd definitely and maybe linux before the towers fell. "the future" just means expensive government training contracts, branding, and conventions.

SHOAH NUFF posted:Sopranos creator accidentally admits that the last scene is supposed to be Tony getting whacked, then backpedals Tony is absolutely dead. There's a pattern that's repeated in the last scene that's basically a giveaway. It's something like... shot of Tony sitting in the booth > bells on door ring > Tony looks up and we see the front door from his perspective > cut to shot of front door to see who is entering. That sequence is repeated a few times and sets the pattern up. When the guy in the Members Only jacket goes to the bathroom he kinda stares Tony down. The next sequence is Tony sitting in the booth > bells ring on door > cut to black. It cuts to black exactly when we should be seeing the front door from Tony's perspective. That's because the guy in the Member's Only jacket shot him just as Meadow is entering the restaurant. Basically they used film tricks to spell out the ending without ever having to explicitly say what happened.

I have noticed that the "DevOps" role is gaining more and more traction and I should really probably get into coding more but man I really really don't want to. I honestly would love to get out of I.T. in general but I have no clue what I would even get into.

weird Asian candy posted:What is your title and what do you do? Im unemployed my man! Devops started off as a management liaison role to help with actually separating developers from operations and take into account technology in business decisions (e.g, should we fix our email or work on replacing something that already works with the newest javascript tookit), although now you really have to look at salary and required skills and ask questions about the chain of command because the buzzword version of the job just has you doing dev and ops work. "the phoenix project" was the original executive thinkpiece about it that got everything started, it's a 200? page fiction piece that's a bit heavyhanded about the everyman programmer fixing all the stupid stuff people bitch about at work and making a tidy sum in the process. If you don't want to do coding specifically there's always stuff like dba and dba-adjacent things like elasticsearch although i'm not sure being an accountant is a step in the right direction away from coding. cad work? i dunno what "computer operator" positions are easy to break into anymore.

My current company hires a ton of "specialists" which basically are just trained in how the software works for all the different applications and then either exist as a competent tech support buffer between the customers and programmers and as the people who go to and train hospitals during their install periods on how the software works. They basically hire anyone with a college degree, and the ones who are anywhere decent at it use it to get hired at hospitals or learn how the software really works and become programmer or dev support staff or go into management and forget everything they ever knew. All I know is I wish other places I worked hired these people, holy poo poo did it suck having customers bugging us without a filter.

I love having to roll out a multi gigabyte container image for every single piece of rear end service our "development partners" poo poo out whenever they make a change or if we patch Windows. Seriously. gently caress Docker. gently caress Jenkins. gently caress DevOps and continuous build/deployment. gently caress information technology. gently caress Duke. gently caress Notre Dame.
