Devops started off as a management liaison role to help with actually separating developers from operations and take into account technology in business decisions (e.g, should we fix our email or work on replacing something that already works with the newest javascript tookit), although now you really have to look at salary and required skills and ask questions about the chain of command because the buzzword version of the job just has you doing dev and ops work. "the phoenix project" was the original executive thinkpiece about it that got everything started, it's a 200? page fiction piece that's a bit heavyhanded about the everyman programmer fixing all the stupid stuff people bitch about at work and making a tidy sum in the process.

If you don't want to do coding specifically there's always stuff like dba and dba-adjacent things like elasticsearch although i'm not sure being an accountant is a step in the right direction away from coding. cad work? i dunno what "computer operator" positions are easy to break into anymore.

Hi thread I need to catch up with y'all.

How am I feeling, well, I've been considering lately that we have no free will and I could die at any moment and the question of whether or not I've accomplished anything worthwhile in my life may or may not even be worth consideration, given that there is no such thing as accomplishment given the transient impermanence of life itself and the inevitability of the absolute and total destruction of everything that humanity ever did or was, but usually those feelings can be suppressed by petting a cat or watching a funny video on youtube. Most of my close family members are suffering in one lovely way or another, and my ability to help them is somewhat limited by various issues like distance, their own privacy, pre-existing interpersonal frictions, and my own sense that some kinds of help aren't actually helpful in the long run, especially when they create unhealthy dependencies, but trying to figure out where those lines land is emotionally challenging. Philosophically, to what extent are we obligated to help others who seem incapable of learning to help themselves, but are also people we love and who don't deserve the lovely poverty-stricken health-issue-plagued lives they're stuck in? That's a rhetorical question, I'm not actually asking for advice, it's just where my head's at these days. Also I hate my career but can't bring myself to drop a $100k/yr income to try to rediscover myself at the age of 44, especially at a time when my health insurance is absolutely vital and we're probably looking at a recession in the next two years.

My back had been not really getting better, the sciatica is a constant struggle with sudden horrible pangs of pain at all hours of the day and night whenever I move in some slightly wrong way or have to sit down or stand up or drive or get in or out of bed or pick up anything, until yesterday morning I was bending over to get something out the bottom drawer of my dresser 10 seconds after I got out of bed and I heard a "pop" in my back and my left leg just went limp and I hit the floor in excruciating pain. But, since then I seem to be like... 30% better, maybe 50% better? Like I can't help but think maybe I had an undiagnosed slipped disk that popped back into place or something along those lines. I'm heading to PT in an hour or so and I'll ask my PT guy about it but it's a promising development, possibly.

I found out my health insurance (Kaiser) includes a discount/deal on gym membership, and my wife is pushing for us to both get one and start getting some exercise. My PT told me to get some cardio. With my back and other issues I'm not talking about anything like weight lifting, he said try recumbant cycling or swimming. Anyway Kaiser lets me sign up for a flat $25/mo fee to any of several local gyms. The closest one is a Planet Fitness, but also nearby are "Instructor at Live 2 B Healthy Strength & Balance," Anytime Fitness, Fitness 19, and slightly farther away is a City Sports Clubs.

Is $25/mo a decent price for gym membership, and are any of these I listed superior? Most likely I'm talking once or twice a week to go do cardio for the next few months and just ease into a very basic fitness program. I'm not looking for strength building or weight loss although those might come in the future (I'm not more than maybe 10lbs overweight and could get stronger, but those aren't real goals for me right now).

Also, do not become a DBA, that is a career that is going obsolete and will be nonexistent in 10 or 15 years as DBs become increasingly autonomous and/or outsourced.

I might do that. Yeah I think definitely so. Mostly misery comes from bad brain chemistry anyway. Almost definitely I'll feel much better by getting good exercise, eating right, and distracting myself with enjoyable pursuits. That feeling better is a product of improved biochemistry does not make it not real.

I find it helps to remember Brian on the cross; some jackass is gonna sing about looking on the bright side of life, and even though he's a jackass and the situation is absurdly tragic, it's still way more fun to just sing along and try to enjoy it than it is to mope about the hopelessness of the situation.

i just don't like how something built as an easy to use limited scope tool always turns into some massive sprawling ecosystem where they invent checkboxes to add to bids on contracts. vmware started with workstation and now you have vSphere Cloud Go Suite that... does virtualization. it's the MS access of virtualization and some vm certified dork is probably going to explain how i'm wrong about how useful the mountain of products is but my point still stands.

I mean they have a ton of VPRODUCTXYZ stuff but vSphere is an excellent product and their core stuff is really well done. You aren't wrong about them rolling out product after product, but as a sysadmin the core suite is really really good. Their orchestration and replication stuff in particular is extremely good outside of the typical vCenter/DRS/HA/vSAN everyday use stuff.

VMware is perfectly acceptable when you need to rapidly get off hardware for scaling up hardware requirements. It isn't the be-all end-all, but it certainly has made data center management easier.

Docker is perfectly fine if you're working on Linux, have a competent development staff, and an actual need. Get it to mature with an actual IDE and solid manager and I could see it going far. Ohhhhh poo poo it’s Rinaldo’s time to shine! Finally something I have experience with, as I’m and admin director at a fitness center! So $25 is pretty reasonable as far as monthly costs go, you just have to be careful about contracts and any things that have additional fees. Like if you want to do something aside from just jump on an elliptical like a yoga class or something it might have additional fees and certainly things like hiit or boot camp will as well. Some places (like mine) bundle that all in and while there is a higher monthly rate it ends up cheaper than other places. But if that is stuff you don’t care about most of the nationwide chains can be fine for your needs.

Just be sure to ask them if there are any restrictions on what your membership can do as some places will but limits on what you can do if insurance pays for your membership. I’d also advise you to see if you can get a tour. You can learn a lot about the culture of the org by how their staff interact with you while showing the facility ie are they going to constantly try to upsell you poo poo like personal trainers or if they don’t care if you come and are happy being a ghost member who just gets autodeducted their membership

Also also check with your insurance if there are usage requirements. Some make you go a certain amount a month which may or may not help with motivation to go

Good luck!
