Hopefully the other County Commissioners follow suit (lol - they already said they weren't going to do that poo poo) or try to implement some sort of campaign finance restrictions at the county level because currently there are none at all. its basically the worst kept secret in Texas(and probably other states) that if you want a county contract you better show up to some fundraiser dinners

Similar to the county commissioner fundraiser thing every single sitting judge is getting donations from every law firm that could potentially be in their court. If your firm isn’t donating, it stands out. It seems like thee are very basic anti corruption things that would be in place but nope.

The new Democratic Harris County Commissioner's Court raised the minimum wage for Harris County employees to $15/hr. Good steps!

The county also dropped its appeal of the ruling against its cash bail program, since all the new judges agree with it. It's almost as if elections have consequences

I think there's some possibility of medical or decrim. But the bill that permitted CBD oil was supposed to be narrowly crafted only for use by kids with a specific type of epilepsy, now you can get that poo poo anywhere. So some lawmakers might be skeptical about promises of limited use. My opinion is that Texas won't legalize until it's legalized federally and they stop getting federal money for enforcing marijuana laws OR somehow a court decision declares weed constitutional.

Same. And maybe around 2060 workers in texas will stop being piss/hair tested for it.

That tends to be because of insurance reasons not statutory ones, I think it would take a separate law to change that. Are employers allowed to discriminate against alcohol users? I don't mean drunk people on the job, I mean can they test you to see if you've had a drink in the past X days and fire you for cause? https://twitter.com/RobertTGarrett/status/1082710314402148352 https://twitter.com/rebekahallen/status/1082712117382266880 Weird. Not that I've ever heard of, no. e: No industry standard drug tests that I'm aware of include alcohol aside from a breathalyzer test.

If it did, I think it would be more well known, given that some companies will scour your online media for poo poo to fire you for if they hate you enough. That sounds like it would be, relatively, more effort to accomplish.

https://twitter.com/JeremySWallace/status/1082736166951100417 Bonnen is a business-first conservative Republican who's gonna push a real bad property tax bill but he's way more adversarial than Strauss, who seemed content to try and ignore the culture war bullshit coming out of the other chamber. He also loving hates the Freedom Caucus and will troll them from the dais. He's very efficient and hates wasting time, so I think given the possible choices, he should be alright. *this disclaimer is protection from y'all quoting this in the future in case this turns out to be wrong to own me*

We'll fuckin see I guess but if you believe all the session previews from all the relevant outlets, Empower Texas is lost in the wilderness after losing seats and treasure. There's also zero buzz about social conservatism poo poo (though I still think we're going to see a huge fight over an abortion ban or trigger bill) whereas last session Patrick had done several press conferences about bathroom bill, sanctuary cities and so on. Haven't heard a peep out of him this year (not even today since he was in loving Washington DC instead of opening day, which is bonkers). They were going to vote in Bonnen by acclimation but then Sticky demanded a record vote, which is a dick move. Especially since it was 147-0 E; goddamn https://twitter.com/davidmcswane/status/1082809628868526080 If you haven't read that DMN series on MCOs, fuuuuck zoux fucked around with this message at 02:49 on Jan 9, 2019 |
