I got brought in for a meeting today with boss and son of owner and they gave me my year end blah blah blah and then toward the end son of owner says "You may not discuss your compensation with anyone, it is confidential." I said I hadn't planned on talking about it but you can't tell me I can't talk about it and then try to enforce that. He got mad so here's to a great start to 2019!

You should tell the internet about your compensation. We promise not to discuss it.

The better wording of that is "I have no intention of doing so. You may want to check with legal because I'm pretty sure you can't make that demand and you don't want to be open to that liability"

It makes it seem like you have the company's best interest in mind.

I don't want to be dependent on a busy help desk for whenever something software-wise fucks up (those systems front the PLCs of production lines directly, they're for control), which could be fixed by a quick reboot, especially when they're only there 9-5 and otherwise hard to reach outside that time. One is always supposed to be on duty on a cellphone, but it often gets "overheard".

I expect a lot of a poo poo. Among others, they've done it already to the system that is supposed to page the members of our volunteer fire brigade, and it failed thrice to do so already (luckily for harmless things). It's the same SCADA software, that didn't like the transition, and they're pretty cavalier about fixing it from what I've heard. Which is hilarious, considering that one department burning down over a decade ago nearly drove the business out of existence.

I was there on a job interview half a year ago, and the manager of the department (who studied CS) was boasting about six nines after the decimal. I didn't react for the sake of making a good appearance, considering I remember one of their larger hypervisor rigs being down for an hour last year, and the phone system being down once for an extended time, too. They're a weird bunch it seems.

poo poo pissing me off is people who think a lack of meetings means a project has stalled. They insist on holding meetings for topics we've already covered just to be sure everybody is still involved and to make it look like something is being accomplished.

Yes, my task that I told you takes 4 weeks is still on track this week, and could be even further along if I didn't have to stop to attend this meeting every few days!

There's a guy I'm working with on this project that keeps trying to defer his work to me when he could quite easily do it himself. I'm not sure if he's just being lazy or if he's trying to blame delays on me not doing not doing his work for him to cover up how behind he is.

Today he messaged me with "this component [that I made and made and am responsible for] is sometimes buggy and sometimes shows the wrong data". Gee, thanks for the descriptive bug report. What do you want me to do about it?

Anyway, the company says they need to keep me here until Jan 25 before I leave for some reason, but I already have another job lined up so it's not like I give two shits if work gets done really.

Nah, see we have project 'scrum' meetings. Every. Single. Day. At 9am. If you want a coffee you'll either have to turn up early or wait half an hour listening to everyone rattle off "what I did yesterday was progress my tasks, what I plan today is progress my tasks". Every. Single. Day.

Casual meetings to talk about poo poo that's going on isn't the worst idea, it's too easy for people to retreat into a shell and only worry about what's in front of them. When you got a large infrastructure it's important to actually hear about what problems other people are having.

Daily is absurd though. Once a week is pushing it.

Once a week hour long status meeting where we bring up anything that was unusual over the past week and the rest of the team might want to know in case someone goes out sick and needs to be covered. And it's at 11am, so as soon as we are done we go to lunch, even if the meeting ends early.

Yeah, we have these, but we end up cancelling them if there isn't anything to talk about, so that it ends up being every second or third week or so. I find them helpful.

Someone spent almost a month embedding sizing and attempting to make images look good for over 3000 products in Excel, by hand. They are now trying to email this and want me to fix it. They promised the customer it would be exactly what they asked for and they are already overdue. I told them to tell the customer this isn't possible and isn't going to happen.

One of the requirements is being able to zoom in and see small details when you click the image, they settled on being able to resize the cell to zoom so they require full sized images. This functionality is on our website I told them to just send them to the website there is no way in hell this thing is getting sent by email and we don't have any cloud storage large enough to store this mess.

I'm just gonna leave this here the file name is also pretty good (it's company followed by a very odd date format)

At my job at the Work Factory our noble leadership has daily Morning Meetings to discuss how yesterday went. We have a single shift supervisor who has to take part on both production lines morning meetings. They mute their phone for the meetings because the Suits dislike getting interrupted so production employees' sole foreman is unavailable from 8 to 9:30ish in the morning.

This is fine, except Supervisor is the guy who has to invite maintenance dudes to persuade our cold war era machinery to cooperate.

To recap: Any stoppage causing malfunction happening early in the morning might not get a technician to fix it up until like 2h later, costing the company possibly 10s of thousands of dollarydoos.

I'm a software guy and we have daily standups that last about 10 mins and I find generally valuable. We follow a pretty strict setup of:

1. Yesterday I did X.
2. Today I am doing Y.
3. I do / don't have blockers.

But we're also moving to just doing this in slack, which I prefer even more as then it's all written down and I can reference it later if I need to.

Apparently I need to add “what chat programs and collaboration software do you use?” to my list of questions for employers. The last two government agencies I’ve worked for (city & state) have had zero chat programs available even for intra department communications.

Why yes, I want to walk all the way across the building to ask you something that could have taken 10 seconds via chat & screen sharing! :argh:

That's the format of our daily scrum meetings but we have them whether there's anything to report or not. We use Slack but not for this apparently. Also we have our tasks set up on project management software so it's quite simple to look up what each person is working on/will be working on and if there are any issues. Still got to dial into a conference call every day though.

I have a colleague who can reliably be expected to answer along the lines of "I didn't have time" to pretty much every question that has been asked.

"Hey this thing you're saying doesn't work was never set up anyway."
"Yeah that was all a bit of a rush and I didn't get a chance to finish it"

"Why do first line keep calling me about really simple things?"
"Did you update any of the documentation on the systems they're asking about when you made the changes last week?"
"No, I didn't have any time"

The guy has maybe 50% of his calendar booked out for things, and yet the concept of using spare time to write documentation to avoid having to be interrupted when you're trying to do other things (that you also don't have time for, obviously) is a leap too far.

IT-wide Stand-Up at 830, attendance not required and you can call in if you’re remote. We keep it short and focused so people can know what major things are going on, approved changes, critical incidents, etc. Each team has a day to talk about projects they are working on.

Immediately after that we have our infrastructure team Stand-Up, which is more along the lines of “this is what I’m working on today.”

It works pretty well for us.
