Actually the pattern that I've observed with Selec and the rest of the Dems are bad :matters: socialism now or nothing, no war but class war brigade is that they view it as the job of someone else to fix the problems of the world. They are mad at the elected Democrats because they don't do what they believe they should be doing, they'll whine about how horrible the system is but won't actually even bother articulating what they are doing to fix the problems.

It's never a matter of figuring out what they personally can do. Notice that the vast majority of posts from these folks are negative regarding what they see as bad/ineffective/weak strategies or actions on the part of others but very seldom positive hopeful or encouraging.

It's not even that they are wrong about a lot of specific complains like Dems being bad, a lot of Dems are objectively bad and a lot are ineffective, weak and compromised but at a bear minimum despite all of that they had the gumption to get up off their rear end and try to do something even if it isn't the perfect fix all of the problems with the world tomorrow or die Hail Mary's.

They get all indignant when it's pointed out that the reason we have poo poo representatives is because the public have poo poo ideas and beliefs and rather than do what they actually can do to fix that real problem by helping those people to learn better less poo poo ideas and beliefs they view that as the job of the politicians which is a pretty loving strange take for someone who claims to be a "leftist". The hole point of being a leftist isn't about being a communist it's about believing that power should flow from the bottom up. That you build your movement by educating those closest to you and encourage them to do the same, that you don't want for the powerful to decide to do something good, that you don't want for a savior to tell you the way forward then any time someone does step forward they'll tear them down mercilessly if they fail to check whatever purity boxes are on their personal list but are perfectly willing to over look far worse failings if it will make their personal lives more comfortable or less stressful.

This is a very stupid take because you have no idea what people are doing in their lives to effect change. None of us can do anything to change what specifically politicians like Pelosi etc can do so we're talking largely theoretically about what we think is right or wrong. Plenty of people are involved in things locally. Discussions of things that are going on at the national level are so far away from what an individual person is capable of doing themselves that it's not really relevant to bring up what you think you should do with your own life. That's why it's not brought up, not that nobody's doing anything.

Cat of Wealth and Taste

Basically you need to flip the script. You shouldn't be the one who puts up with their crappy views, they should put up with your good views. Because little ears are listening, and someone they like and respect telling Dad that they are wrong and there are other ways of thinking is extremely important for kids who are forced to grow up in that environment.

When I was a pre-teen I heard Grandpa privately discussing what an idiot my father was for voting Republican with my Grandma. That was a catalyst moment for me, because no one had ever challenged my father in my presence and I just parroted all the (extremely wrong) poo poo he said my whole life. Having heard that from someone else I respected, I started to think outside of my Dad's fox-o-sphere and eventually became a huge leftist.

I might have done that another way but I clearly remember that moment almost twenty years later because it was the moment I started to think about my own worldview independently of my parents. It's so very important to be that voice, guys.

As a Christian myself who grew up part-time in an Evangelical church...kind of, yeah. There is definitely a lot of weird psycho-sexual poo poo. Even early Christian texts refer to the "Church," writ large, as the bride of Christ. It was meant as poetic license at the time, but a lot of Evangelicals and their hyper-emphasis on sexual "purity" channel their energy into really weird poo poo like this.

Seriously talking to your family about racism is valuable because you are doing a service to every poc they interact with after that

The issue is there are a lot of family members who aren't dropping n bombs or other racial slurs but rather just happen to have inhaled a bunch of Fox News propaganda. And pushing against that propaganda is valuable, but it's probably not valuable or effective to start heated political Christnas dinner debates with my mid-eighties Trump supporting Methodist grandmother who fears the drugs and criminals she thinks are streaming over the border from her home in upstate New York.

Like yeah it's easy to say someone yelling racial slurs at the card table is a racist who you shouldn't associate with. A lot of people's Trump supporting relatives are going to fall far short of that though. It's good to push against their propaganda addled views but maybe not to the point where I have to explain to my dad over the seven hour car ride home why I had to pick a fight with his elderly mother.

It's dumb but it's just kinda a lame way to keep kids busy in springtime and try to teach middle schoolers how to have a nice meal.

THIS is actually the weird loving opposite, where you DON'T want your kid meeting others, because she's just for you...

Cotillion is basically what the old money south did with their children to teach them society and indoctrinate them into Daughters of the Confederacy and arrange marriages and poo poo. These days it's just a manners course.

I'm pretty sure purity balls stemmed out of Evangelical megachurch poo poo from flyover country and not the South, but it's a thing here too now as white rural America has become a monoculture.

It could end the shutdown as a “way out” for Trump to save face however emergency funding isn’t a stamp- it’s a reallocation of funds that still needs to go through appropriation review.

Congress would just sue and request an injunction preventing it from happening. It would be in litigation for a few weeks and by the time it’s finally denied by the courts, everyone would have forgotten about it.

He wasn't thinking that far ahead. The plan was to ignore Puerto Rico because it's full of brown people who vote Democrat while building the wall with Mexican money. Then the plan was to shut down the government and build the wall with money appropriated by Democrats. Now the plan is to scrounge up wall money from any part of the government he's not explicitly banned from raiding. He probably is explicitly banned from raiding this, or at least the courts will see it that way, and then it will be time for plan D.

Nebraska governor refuses to sign proclamation honoring book whose author criticized Trump

quote:

Ricketts told reporters that he would not sign a proclamation honoring “This Blessed Earth: A Year in the Life of an American Family Farm,” by journalist and writer Ted Genoways, The Omaha World-Herald reported Tuesday.

The book, which Ricketts said he has not read, follows the life of a York County farmer named Rick Hammond.

“If you just go look, this author has been a political activist, has been very critical of our national leaders and so forth, and not really saying things that are going to bring Nebraskans together, but really trying to be somebody who is more divisive,” Ricketts said.

When did being part of a society become such a bad thing anyways? I mean it's whole reason we make governments to support each other. Yet everyone wants to think that society didn't exist for their accomplishments? (It did exist for any complications thought I guarantee)
