My grandfather used to make root beer at home but he stopped before I was born and is dead now so I can't ask him. However, as a descendant of a former root beer maker, the sassafras thing sounds right to me.

There's no fixed recipe, lots of different ingredients can be used, but there's almost always something minty heavy in the mix. Wintergreen is. I've made plain sassafras root beer, and it's got a minty taste even if it's not just mint. To go with memes almost as archaic as making root beer:
