Breakfast All Day posted:should probably be a thread like the #woke thread on this stuff and the delicate related topics around creating a sort of cultural autism (would happily adopt a less loaded term) where people become unable to infer internal states and motivations of characters without these cartoonish cues even in other braindead popular media, also probably related to the division of attention in the netflix + phone national ritual, and how this plays out socially and politically i agree that a CSPAM general cultural criticism thread would be good, I've been watching a lot of stuff as a consequence of my unemployment and I've often wanted to post about the way popular media eternalizes and reinscribes liberal systems, often while attempting to criticize some element of them on the topic of reddits, what you're describing seems to be the only shared non-horrifble experience these sorts of culturally alienated consumers have, and so they become a referential replacement for real interaction. the Marvel subreddit sometimes finds its way to the top of the website and its just entirely half-remembered, unfunny quotes from the movie with more nested half-remembered quotes in response, ad infinitum. but what makes that really bad is critical analysis is basically forbidden by the broader discourse in those sorts of forums, so even saying something like "movies, games and other art inherently reproduce or represent political power arrangements by dint of depicting the real world, where they exist" will get you lambasted by thousands of people who genuinely believe politics are a discrete and obvious thing and the culture industry is an actual friend, not an industry like other things, so they're apolitical and it is okay

Todd was the first person to really blow up how absolutely crass and commercial the industry was, and he did it by realizing that the powers that be would gently caress him at any opportunity so he needed to watch out for himself by selling his art and poo poo There's a great interview where he says he doesn't really care what happens in an issue of Spider-Man, as long as he gets to draw a couple cool splash pages with sweet posts that he can sell to nerds later and at the time that was controversial and now that's just like, an obvious approach to a job

it’s pretty pathetic comic sales are still at a fraction they’ve ever been and still declining, wokelords pretend (believe) that they’re picking up among children and youth after a few decades of being written exclusively for stunted manchildren and the reactionaries pretend (believe) that it’s SJW propaganda to corrupt ARE KIDs but the reader demographics haven’t really changed. and as said manga is loving free (well there’s  sites for American comics too nowadays) and comics take up way too much pocket money for a kid now.
