The Tories are setting themselves up for the inevitable leadership struggle after March since May has said she'll step down. Hunt seems to angling for the Tory Remain side, Amber Rudd might be angling for the "compassionate conservativism" side and hoping everyone forgets she's a great big racist

To be fair, the manifesto is hardly the highest ambition of the labour party's left wing. There are a lot of good things you can do within the EU frame - work and there are also quite a few rules you can get away with ignoring. But I'm sure that if you are in your twenties and join a left-wing political party you'll want more than gradual change towards a somewhat more social democratic system of government. The problem is of course how to get there from here.

quote:As Bolton and Pitts observe, the result is a highly personalised and moralistic politics, a thousand miles away from rigorous economic and class analysis. The hook-nosed “Rothschild” is the left’s version of the Polish plumber or layabout scrounger. The symmetry with the Trump and the Brexit movement is close to perfect. All oppose the EU. All admire Putin, and in the case of Arron Banks and Seumas Milne pay homage to the Russian state. We should not be surprised. If you believe that liberal democracy is a sham – a conspiracy that hides the machinations of the real rulers of the world – any attack on the liberal order is better than none. I love these Nick Cohen pieces!
