This is a very good take. Yeah, it doesn't help that Western audiences are, let's face it, not used to superhero films with an ideological standpoint nowadays. Much less an anti-imperialist one.

It's just a pretty worn-out conceit in superhero films and comic books.

The big flaw in Killmonger and the dude in Aquaman and all is the writers realized they had a baddie that was, at worst, doing the right thing the wrong way, and that nuance can't exist in a super hero movie. A comic series where both baddie and goodie get time to have arcs and play off old stories and all? For sure, but not in a two hour movie for all audiences. So they wind up taking a misguided but not wrong character and just having him go from "our people left everyone else to suffer and be destroyed, we need to liberate them" to "I lust for the blood of white babies" with no reason.

I thought the movie made it abundantly clear that Killmonger didn't so much care about helping oppressed people as he did getting revenge on oppressors, and that furthermore the main reason he was a villain wasn't that his goal was wrong but that he used the worst oppressors of all's means to achieve his ends, failing to recognize that such means can't really be put to good use. In trying to overturn an unjust system he was only going to perpetuate and escalate it. They had an entire scene where he talks to the ghost of his father underlining his central character flaw.

I only know the stuff that hit it big on the radio etc. but, while it's true many of nu metal lyrics are misogynistic and valorize aggression, they're also awful in myriad other ways.

nu metal is like if you took a decent melvins album and used it to make a hundred other albums via homeopathy
|
# ? Jan 11, 2019 17:44 |

that's more tool specifically. all the good melvins albums are too weird for nu metal it's homeopathic-grade helmet riffs with a soupçon of 80s funk rock and new romantic cheese

Imagine liking hip hop and criticizing nu metal for misogynistic lyrics. And saying it valorizes aggression is some Marilyn Manson did Columbine FOX news poo poo. Working class kids were already angry because the world is ridiculously lovely and all signs pointed towards it getting even shittier. The generation coming up at the time were hopeless, cynical, and alone. Nu metal touched on that frustration in such a way that it brought all those kids together and showed them that they weren't alone, and allowed them all to vent together. It was therapy. Also the clown guy was hitting a keg with a baseball bat and the german guy had all set himself on fire.
