Dang, this thread went downhill when people started responding to the shills. In relevant news: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-46808797 Apparently Gonen Segev was energy minister in Israel in the 1990s, and gave it up to.. smuggle 30.000 ecstacy pills on a diplomatic visa and leak state secrets to Iran. It's probably not the final straw between Iran and Israel, but things are bound to heat up from here.

It's interesting to look at this map and consider that within the last two years, the Taliban has nearly captured Mazir-i sharif, Kunduz, Ghazni, and Farah, which all sit on the route taken by Soviet forces. I think they're all still vital logistic links.

Starting a conflict with Iran especially after stating a goal to get out of ME/central asian quagmires would be so profoundly stupid and ironically timed. That and the scale of Iran and their military strength and experience is far beyond what Iraq had in 2001. Plus they're two decades deep into fighting insurgency based conflicts in half of their neighbors. Iran would be an absolutely massive undertaking. Like bigger than anything the US military has done since WW2 probably. For context, the Koreas were ~35 million people before the war and Vietnam was also around 35. Iran is 80ish million, has conscription and a substantial domestic arms industry and a lot of advanced weaponry as well, plus a stranglehold on global shipping if they want to burn all international good will.
