The Vistula Lagoon ditch may or may not be an environmental disaster in the making, but consider this: The Lagoon is, at most, five metres deep on its Polish side. There are no real harbours there. The only major town in the area is Elbląg, which does not have a harbour for anything bigger than a ferry. And Gdansk, the fifth largest city on the Baltic (third largest metropolitan area), is fifty kilometres west of Elbląg. Why would we need to open the Lagoon to the sea again?

Meanwhile, Russia is really gearing up their propaganda machine to show Belarus as a nationalist state where people are attacked for speaking Russia (patently not true). They've been doing it for quite some time on social media and on websites like Sputnik, but now it's actually on TV. Most of their material comes from this video, where some nerdy-sounding bloke who speaks Belarusian seems to attack a man in a Cossack hat in a Minsk metro train and shouting 'suitcase, railway station, Russia'. It's a common phrase from the Soviet past, where instead of Russia it was about Israel (i.e. if you don't like it here, pack your things and move to where you come from). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoO6kG8vK_g It's not clear if the video is real or staged, but it's been shown on NTV and Russia 1 as an example of how hostile Belarus is for Russians. And of course along with that they gently remind that Belarusian independence was only possible thanks to Soviet Russia, and that Belarusians and Russians are one people, and other usual guff. On both channels, this was right between stories about Ukraine, so the narrative is pretty explicit here. Social media campaign is also getting more brazen with posts like this: tldr: My friend just returned from Minsk, and he and his daughter were viciously attacked at the railways station for speaking Russian, and the police did nothing. Obviously, Minsk's central railway station is infamous for having too many policemen (literally at least 5 on every floor), who immediately react to any slight possibility of altercation, because they are extremely bored all the time. I don't see how this campaign can possibly be effective inside of Belarus, where ~90% of people speak Russian in their everyday life, and the rest pretty much don't care if you speak Russian to them. You're pretty much more likely to draw some looks or cause eye-rolling if you speak Belarusian. But it might work on some Russians who've already completely bought into similar propaganda about Ukraine.

Same goes for Russians, that might not want additional economic stress. Especially when all that Western business GTFOs from Minsk due to uncertainty. I'm not looking for the next step "corridor to Kaliningrad is vital to our country, and any Pole or Lithuanian fascist saying otherwise should shut their mouths".

Eh, Belarus thing is being blown out of proportion in the news because it sounds more fun than "nothing much is happening really". Here is Lavrov saying that while initial treaty included common constitution, court and parliament, none of these things are possible now and Russia doesn't insist on them happening. https://tass.ru/politika/6004285

It may also be kind of a signal to pro-Russian Belarusians that Lukashenko has to go, as he's the one making those things impossible. Not going to work anyway, but worth a try.

Russia may outwardly state they want to bring Belarus into the fold but it will never come militarily, the land is worth too much to have hardcore partisan activity. Putin understands these things can take decades, but the end goal is a huge loving forest in a not so bad and getting better climate and lumber to build the best dachas this side of the Vistula. If belarusian annexation takes 20 years it takes 20 years, Russia will continue to be on Belorusian's border for the foreseeable forever, so owning a PM or president (not entirely familiar with belarus internal political structure). stepping stones

In other news: https://www.unian.info/politics/10413525-putin-agrees-to-allow-access-of-french-german-experts-to-kerch-strait-area.html quote:"I can only say one thing. Over a month ago, Chancellor Merkel asked President Putin to allow German specialists to come to the Kerch Strait area and see how the passage through this water area is being carried out, given that safety standards must be observed – whether the pilotage is present, etc. – and President Putin immediately agreed," Lavrov said at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Moscow on Friday, an UNIAN correspondent in Russia reports.

I've seen poo poo you people wouldn't believe. Tanzanian cargo ships on fire off the coast of Crimea. I watched a leaking fuel glitter in the dark near the Kerch Strait. All those moment will be lost in time... like sailors in sea water. Time to sink. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46948718 Seems like a regular fuckup during fuel transfer and not sabotage or conflict related though. anilEhilated posted:Good news, we were, in fact, waiting only a day. from that article "A court in Russia has extended by three months the detention of 24 Ukrainian sailors captured in the incident. They are accused of illegally crossing into Russian territory. Ukraine condemned the Russian move, denying that its ships had violated the navigation laws in the area. The strait lies off Ukraine's Crimea peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014." both sides, who knows, whose job is it to determine truth anyway, *shrug*
