Saint Joe County Indiana Goons (I know a few of you are here) if you want to get involved on the local level with the Democrats and are under 35 years of age, there is a young Dem meeting downtown tomorrow at 6 at the Dem Headquarters. Joining is 25 bucks if you are interested. Also primaries for local elections will be coming soon! Will be posting steps on how to get on the Indiana ballot when I have some time later this week. Well that’s a surprise. VA Senate votes to advance a bill to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 by 2021. The Republicans know it’s an election year, and they’re gonna try and save their bacon. https://www.richmond.com/news/virgi...ecfc85e447.html

I really don't get the Times-Dispatch's bizarre framing, though: quote:The vote, advancing the bill to the floor, could be an election-year effort to force all 19 Democrats to take a vote on an issue that could alienate members of the business community. All 40 senators and 100 delegates are up for election in November. Like, they don't even consider the idea that Republicans could be afraid of going against public opinion on an issue for which there is broad support, it's gotta be the business community behind this nefarious trap. Yeah Republicans are evil fuckers, but I think what's getting me is the idea that somehow the minimum wage issue coming to the floor hurts Democrats. What a terrible paper we have.

I mean, it might be a trap, but i don’t think it’s a trap for Democrats. We’re all savoring the opportunity to finish the job. Voting against a minimum wage hike in the more depressed areas of VA sounds like a death sentence to me.

That's my thoughts on the matter, too-- there's few issues with broader support than a minwage hike. The T-D is just so stuck in its old-school Reagan business Republican worldview it can't see that. Their politics reporting is awful, and it's gotten even worse since Ned Oliver et al jumped ship to form the Virginia Mercury.

These changes must pass the legislature again after the 2020 elections before they can go to the voters for approval in a referendum to amend the state constitution. great news for upstart candidates in the 2024 primaries

Northern VA has a cost of living that is approaching California and they already have a 15 dollar minimum wage. This will only help people in rural areas that need better wages as well as people in NOVA. I am particularly excited for LEe Carter's teacher strike legislation. Teachers should have the ability to loving strike and anyone who says otherwise can go gently caress themselves. We treat educators like dirt in this country and it needs to stop.

Fritz Coldcockin posted:Did any of those reforms make it easier for AOC to primary Chuck Schumer in 2022? The key reform you're looking for there is narrowing the window to register as a Democrat so you can vote in the Democratic primary (iirc you have to register months before the campaigns even start, so by the time you get excited about a primary candidate its too late). I'm trying to find out if that got changed. I believe same-day voter registration should do it, so the amendment would need to pass. edit: nope, that was not changed apparently: quote:Other voting rights priorities left out of Monday’s voting rights package include the ability to change party affiliation close to an election (the deadline is currently October of the previous year), and a bill that would create more user-friendly ballots, Stewart-Cousins' office confirmed. evilweasel fucked around with this message at 18:14 on Jan 15, 2019 |

The 27th didn't have a stated deadline as part of it at all, as far as I know.

What's interesting is that a lot of deadline provisions in proposed amendments are actually a part of the amendment, something like "4. This provision shall have no effect unless ratified before a date seven years after its submission to the states." The deadline for the ERA was part of the joint resolution sending it to the states, not the amendment itself, so it's more malleable; even if it's legal, it's arguably alterable by Congress. Not that the Republican Senate would do poo poo to help pass the ERA.

Local politics is loving nuts: Quick background. In 1994, Phoenix wanted to build a stadium. Unfortunately, in 1989, Phoenix voters had passed a referendum requiring public approval to build any sports facility costing more than 3 million. This was out of frustration at sales taxes being levied to pay for sports. So, the State Legislature passed a law transferring the authority to build the stadium to the county instead of the city, and then the county board passed a sales tax. Speaking of VA being All Elections All The Time, we've got one on Feb 19th, to put this guy into Jennifer Boysko's seat. So if DMV goons wanna help out in like Herndon or something, hit me up (or hit them up at the website I guess). As a bonus incentive, the Party Old Guard folks seem to hate him more than Lee Carter (though Lee is probably still further to the left than Ibraheem). My favorite part is that David Yancey (the guy who won b/c his name got pulled out of a hat)'s district got bluer, and he's got a rematch against Shelley Simonds (who tied him last time). That one will be fun.
