Can we make 2020 something more than a civil war between Democrats and Republicans?

Our democracy is broken. On every issue that matters, our leaders are unwilling — or unable — to take meaningful action. Time and again, we can see that what voters want does not matter.

As a result, most of America has turned away from politics. The biggest political party in America today is “none of the above.” And who could blame them?

That’s the challenge that has inspired Equal Citizens founder, Lawrence Lessig. Without doubting the urgent need to defeat our current President, Lessig lays out a strategy that leverages the common ground that unites America, to the end of fixing our rigged and broken democracy.

Drawing upon the history of other moments of fundamental change in America, Lessig maps a strategy that steps above our partisan divide. It is a moonshot, no doubt. But it is the one shot that could get us beyond the pathological division that destroys our government today.

This is the conversation that the politicians won’t give us. And that’s precisely why we citizens must begin it now.

Well that’s a surprise. VA Senate votes to advance a bill to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 by 2021.

The Republicans know it’s an election year, and they’re gonna try and save their bacon.

I really don't get the Times-Dispatch's bizarre framing, though:

quote:

The vote, advancing the bill to the floor, could be an election-year effort to force all 19 Democrats to take a vote on an issue that could alienate members of the business community. All 40 senators and 100 delegates are up for election in November.

Like, they don't even consider the idea that Republicans could be afraid of going against public opinion on an issue for which there is broad support, it's gotta be the business community behind this nefarious trap. Yeah Republicans are evil fuckers, but I think what's getting me is the idea that somehow the minimum wage issue coming to the floor hurts Democrats. What a terrible paper we have.

That's my thoughts on the matter, too-- there's few issues with broader support than a minwage hike. The T-D is just so stuck in its old-school Reagan business Republican worldview it can't see that. Their politics reporting is awful, and it's gotten even worse since Ned Oliver et al jumped ship to form the Virginia Mercury.

Yeah, I honestly don't see how this is a negative for VA. Northern VA has a cost of living that is approaching California and they already have a 15 dollar minimum wage. This will only help people in rural areas that need better wages as well as people in NOVA. I am particularly excited for LEe Carter's teacher strike legislation. Teachers should have the ability to loving strike and anyone who says otherwise can go gently caress themselves. We treat educators like dirt in this country and it needs to stop.

The key reform you're looking for there is narrowing the window to register as a Democrat so you can vote in the Democratic primary (iirc you have to register months before the campaigns even start, so by the time you get excited about a primary candidate its too late). I'm trying to find out if that got changed. I believe same-day voter registration should do it, so the amendment would need to pass.

edit: nope, that was not changed apparently:

Other voting rights priorities left out of Monday’s voting rights package include the ability to change party affiliation close to an election (the deadline is currently October of the previous year), and a bill that would create more user-friendly ballots, Stewart-Cousins' office confirmed.

What's interesting is that a lot of deadline provisions in proposed amendments are actually a part of the amendment, something like "4. This provision shall have no effect unless ratified before a date seven years after its submission to the states." The deadline for the ERA was part of the joint resolution sending it to the states, not the amendment itself, so it's more malleable; even if it's legal, it's arguably alterable by Congress. Not that the Republican Senate would do poo poo to help pass the ERA.

Local politics is loving nuts:

Quick background. In 1994, Phoenix wanted to build a stadium.
Unfortunately, in 1989, Phoenix voters had passed a referendum requiring public approval to build any sports facility costing more than 3 million. This was out of frustration at sales taxes being levied to pay for sports.
So, the State Legislature passed a law transferring the authority to build the stadium to the county instead of the city, and then the county board passed a sales tax.

im guessing quite a few of those R-held and trump-won seats still look like potential pickups after 2017/2018, when gillespie and stewart got stomped in that order? iirc gillespie losing chesterfield and virginia beach were pretty big reasons why david brat and scott taylor looked vulnerable in 2018 (and of course stewart being toxic in those areas helped sink both of them in november)

North Carolina Chief Justice Mark Martin is leaving the state's Supreme Court after 20 years to become a Virginia law school dean.

The resignation means Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper gets to decide who fills the Republican's seat on the court and who the next chief justice will be. Five of the seven current Supreme Court members are registered Democrats.

The long-standing tradition calls for appointing the senior associate justice when there is a vacancy in the top post, which would mean republican Paul Newby is in line to become chief justice.

Martin told The Associated Press on Friday of his decision to resign the chief justice's post at the end of February. He's held the post since 2014 and will become dean of Regent University law school in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Actually, that's a lie. My favorite part is that David Yancey (the guy who won b/c his name got pulled out of a hat)'s district got bluer, and he's got a rematch against Shelley Simonds (who tied him last time). That one will be fun.
