Gillibrand is a weathervane, she'll point whereever the party points, but she'll also be super easy to slime (rightly or wrongly) because she is the senator for Wall Street

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

Here's a profile and evaluation of her chances (they suck):
https://electoral-vote.com/evp2019/Pres/Maps/Jan11.html#item-7

quote:

Three Biggest Pros: (1) Nobody will excite Trump-hating voters more than Gillibrand—beyond her outspoken criticism of his history of sexual assault, she's also voted against more of his cabinet nominees than any other senator; (2) Her relative youth will be a major selling point against the two-decades-older Trump; and (3) She's pretty unfiltered, and voters seem to like that these days.

Three Biggest Cons: (1) Progressives may rebel against someone with Gillibrand's sometimes-conservative record, particularly when it's paired with having worked for Big Tobacco; (2) Republicans will attack her, with some justification, and probably with some success, as Hillary 2.0; and (3) Blue-collar, Midwestern men will not be rejoining the Democratic bandwagon in droves if Gillibrand is the candidate.

Leperflesh

She mostly appeals to people who want to vote for a (white) woman, but think Elizabeth Warren is too liberal, Amy Klobuchar is too conservative, and who are really big on Me Too. (white) because she's probably similarly positioned as Kamala Harris politically?

She has very little chance in a field with women like Warren (clearly running ahead of her) and Harris (probably similar name recognition), although she's probably slightly ahead of Amy Klobuchar in terms of name recognition. Plus like at least a dozen men. At this point it's hard to say there's a clear dem frontrunner but I'd say the top five are warren, biden, sanders, hillary (oh god please no), and maybe beto.

Very unlikely. I'd say it's too early to definitively rule out potential candidates who have actual political experience and qualifications like Tulsi, but she has even less name recognition than the others I mentioned, and also comes from a politically irrelevant state (Hawaii is both reliably blue and very low population).

She's a hindu woman born in american samoa, has sympathetic views towards Bashar al-Assad, and is only a member of the house of reps (electing a member of the house is extremely rare; we seem to greatly prefer senators and governors).

What she has going for her is her military career, support from Bernie (if he doesn't run), and she's young and attractive. But if Bernie runs, she has no prayer, and if he doesn't, it's hard to see Bernie voters picking Gabbard over Warren.

e. I suspect she's basically running for vice president. Probably true of several of the other candidates right now. If any of the more centrist democratic men win the nomination, someone like Gabbard gives them more lefty cred, puts a woman on the ticket, and does not remove a democratic senator from office.

Bernie is politically ideal but he's pretty drat old (he'd be 79 when taking office), and he has consistently failed to appeal to minority voters. I'd like to see him decide not to run and publicly back a strong candidate who is solidly to the left of the Democratic center.

Gillibrand is strongly tied to the Clintons, which I think could be poisonous right now. I don't like her as a candidate for pres or VP.

Warren might be the strongest candidate who isn't an old white man, which puts her in the front for me right now. So I guess I'd like to see Bernie endorsing a Warren ticket, with maybe someone like Beto as VP (if the Dems take Texas, Trump cannot reasonably win).

...but to be honest I don't really care who the nominee is as long as it's someone who can decisively beat Trump. And I really am not sure who that is right now, either.

Me too but there's literally no one there. The Gen X and the Boomers were totally co-opted by the Clinton model of third wayism. Bernie, Dennis Kucinich(not that I'd want him to be president), and a bunch of dead guys are the only American politicians who advocate true leftist policies. You have some folks in the younger generation like AOC but none of them have qualifying government experience. Hell, as noted up thread Cortez doesn't even meet the age requirement.

I like Warren a lot but I fear that implementing her brand of restrained capitalism would be like bucketing our water on the titanic. Of course it's possible a Bernie win freaks out the conservative markets so badly we get a recession that neuters his ability to implement meaningful change. I think it's worse that risk because everything flows from the top in American politics. If we get a real sea change in political beliefs from the current younger generations we could theoretically create a healthy socialist nation with in our life times.

Given the current makeup of the senate and to a lesser degree the house, even if Bernie won with a huge mandate in a good economy most of his platform is dead on arrival. A true leftist agenda simply will not happen quickly. The best we can really hope for the next decade is to shift the Overton window more to the left by normalizing left positions that still mostly get defeated in committee and do not lead to major changes in law.

If you're talking about the article from last week it was clickbait horse poo poo. Essentially one source saying that Gillibrand was reaching out to everyone to let them know she was running and was looking for donors. Nothing specifically in the vein of courting wall street. That doesn't mean she isn't a NY senator, as such probably too close with a bunch of hedge fund managers, but the article was a hit piece that means nothing.

Yeah inevitably one of those will have the better time slot, and the candidates relegated to the kid's table debate will be disadvantaged. And it'll still potentially be like 8 candidates per debate.

They will have to narrow it down and whatever method they use is going to be unfair to some people,
