China is literally going to start killing Canadian drug criminals because we arrested the Huawei CEO.

Chinese CEOs trying to avoid travel through the US should probably be aware there's a US-Canada extradition treaty, so this travel advisory is actually appropriate.

It is pretty funny that diplomatic logic dictates the Chinese state treat Canada as a whipping boy for the US. Trudeau's govt seems to be wearing the international equivalent of a kick-me sign.

It's sarcasm, I think drug laws are ridiculously archaic in general and capital punishment is absolutely indefensible.

I also think that broadly speaking, it's a bad idea to sling drugs anywhere that will kill you for it as a matter of policy.

And if he wasn't they killed an innocent man.

Courts aren't infallible. His retrial took less than a day and with no new evidence turned a 15 year sentence into the death penalty.

I think the problem more so is that China normally wouldn't execute a foreign citizen for drug crime but are doing it solely right now as a way of trying to intimidate Canada for the Huawei thing.

Big business is garbage.

Things are still unconfirmed, but if this pans out it's loving horrible.

Lac-Mégantic footage allegedly used in 2nd Netflix show

quote:

A day after learning that a science-fiction show on Netflix used footage of the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster, the mayor of the Quebec town said she believes images of the tragedy were used in a second Netflix production, Bird Box.

Lac-Mégantic Mayor Julie Morin wants the streaming service to take a look at its movie and TV catalogue to make sure no other production is using images of the tragedy as entertainment.

"I don't know if this is happening all the time, but we are looking for assurances from Netflix that… they are going to remove them," Morin said.

"You can be sure we are going to follow up on this, and our citizens are on our side."

High school ethics teacher Guillaume Bouchard was watching the most recent season of Travelers on Netflix over the holidays when he noticed something oddly familiar on his screen.

In the science-fiction series, a nuclear device had just exploded on the streets of London, but instead of seeing fires ravaging locations in the U.K. capital, Bouchard was looking at orange flames towering over a small town.

At the end of the street, a black oil tanker burned in the background.

"I thought: No way. No way did they do that," Bouchard said. He paused the show and after a quick internet search had his suspicions confirmed. The brief images on Netflix were taken from real-life footage of one of the deadliest disasters in recent Canadian history, when a train carrying crude oil derailed, exploded and killed 47 people in Lac-Mégantic in 2013.

"I don't know anyone who died in Lac-Mégantic," Bouchard said. "But if I was someone who lost someone close and I was home and I saw this, I don't know how I would react. It wouldn't be good."

Daycare Operator / Unsuccessful (48-35) 2017 BC Liberal Candidate.
Local since 1999.

On the surface I think Karen Wang is a pretty weak candidate compared to the Conservative's Jay Shin - she's a fairly generic "small business owner" candidate whose answer to our current housing affordability issues is "I believe in a free market. It's always demand and supply. Obviously we need more supply". Thanks, Karen! Although her business does happen to be a small cluster of 2-3 daycare facilities, and the NDP generally likes talking a big childcare game, one that's very shy on anything resembling implementation. She did significantly worse in the 2017 provincial election (without an incumbent) than the previous BC Liberal candidates for the provincial riding had in 2009 / 2013, and they were running against a far more prominent local NDP candidate.

She has now "resigned" (no huge push there, I'm sure) as a candidate. Idiot. Unsure at present if the Liberals will run Cyrus Eduljee (also ran for nomination), Adam Pankratz (nearly upset Kennedy Stewart last time, supported Cyrus' nom), or nobody... If they want Singh to actually maybe lose, go team nobody!

Very much this. The Liberals and Conservatives have similar domestic and foreign policies. Trudeau might be more willing to offer verbal condemnation of human rights abuses, but at the end of the day he's not any more willing to actually do something about it than Harper would have been. Remember that both major parties serve the interests of the wealthy elite exclusively, and their masters are profiting handsomely from selling weapons to Saudi Arabia.
