I always got the sense that Rikke, Ulfric, and Galmar were all roughly in the same age range so hobo grandpa Galmar isn't really doing it for me.

It's probably Paul Eiding's gravely old rear end man voice for him that makes people think otherwise. He sounds like Scandinavian Roy Campbell.

She's Tullius's second in command at Castle Dour in Solitude, his equivalent to Galmar on the Stormcloaks side. The only time you really encounter her is when you take the Greybeard's summons to Tullius in Season Unending, or if you follow the Imperial side of the civil war to its completion.

Yeah that is kind of funny that between her and Tullius it's basically Commander Ivanova working for Colonel Tigh...

She's also one of the biggest badasses in Skyrim, if you win the civil war as the stormcloaks, she takes on Galmar, Ulfric, and the Dragonborn by herself.

I picked up Uthgerd as a companion really early into my playthrough, and as we were wandering through the wilderness, out of nowhere she just starts swinging her greatsword at my head. Before I could even say "Calm Down", a Thalmor patrol escorting some captive walked by and the captive started casting spells at Uthgerd to protect me. The Thalmor said "I'm getting out of here!" and scattered all over the place. Uthgerd kept dropping the captive, but he must've been protected/essential because he just kept getting back up and throwing more magic at her. Eventually he killed her, the captive was like "Have a good one" or something, and then met back up with the Thalmor to resume being escorted as a captive. Maybe two seconds later, a courier arrived saying that the Jarl of Whiterun gave me Uthgerd's Will, worth approximately 300 septims. I took her housekey off her body and hoped she wouldn't haunt me if I moved into her house, which I used as my base of operations for the first 10-15 levels. Anyway maybe this is offtopic for the modding thread but I'll just pretend there was a mod conflict that made her turn hostile after a few minutes.

Faster than the others

The Thalmor going "gently caress this poo poo, we're outta here" and the prisoner just calmly waiting to be "recaptured" at the end are the best parts of this story.

One time, I got to Solitude, and in the middle of the execution cutscene, everyone went hostile, including Roggvir. I still have no idea why, but it happened every single time on that character, no matter what I tried. I had no bounty in Solitude, and the guards outside the gate were perfectly civil. I tried clearing all my buffs and effects beforehand, reloading a previous save, waiting a few days, dismissing all of my followers, nothing worked. That character just could not enter Solitude, on threat of an armed lynch mob.

This happened to me but in whiterun. Getting a bounty and then clearing it seems to have fixed it.

Total Character Makeover is also good

I prefer Diversity mainly because it covers more NPCs. Generally unless you're following a mod guide which specifically patches out conflicts (and if you do, boy howdy hope you like waifus), you want to pick only one NPC overhaul and stick with it, otherwise you'll get texture collision and half of your NPCs will be running around with jet-black skin. Also WICO is horribly broken out of the box, so don't pick that one!

black-face bug with some NPCs, some NPCs become unkillable which makes quests associated with them impossible to finish. Modder disappeared shortly after posting the mod, so nothing's ever been done to fix.

This is a guide to fixing its issues: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/22615

Diversity is basically WICO with improved hair and less bugs, though.

I really like living in the Clockwork Manor but I wish I could have auto-sorting for things not on the specified formlists - stuff like Book Covers Skyrim Lost Library books sorting into the bookcases. Is there a better way to deal with this? I feel like both editing formlists and manually sorting my books into however many cabinets are tasks of similar madness.

Man this really doesn't have anything to do with modding but I wish there was a little more going on with companions in Skyrim. Like how in Mass Effect (and plenty of other older CRPGs) you get to know your squad mates the more and more you spend time talking to them, and it makes you feel like they're actual characters travelling with you, fighting alongside you, etc.

In Skyrim all the companions I've met so far have all the personality of an old school FF NPC that stands in one spot and repeats the same phrase over and over again. But they can carry a lot of stuff.

Like what is even the point of marriage and children in Skyrim? It feels akin to picking out drapes to my house(s).

Two comments to this post:

first, I would love a mod(pack) that adds this functionality to the game. Give me Bioware NPCs in my Skyrim, please!

second, there is somewhere on YouTube a discussion about the agency and lack thereof in Skyrim characters that I stumbled onto by accident years ago and cannot for the life of me remember. Among the things discussed was how frequently various characters were modded to add in new functionalities, to include sexytime stuff, but that none of these new functionalities were ever actually reflected in the game. So while you might make a new NPC or modify an existing NPC to have a few lines of dialog about how they're now your maid instead of your wife, or watch a crudely-rendered SFM porn scene play out in front of you, the rest of the world tends to not react or care. No one comments on the out-of-place French maid following you around, and people going about their usual patrol routines will walk right through your little wankfest in the middle of town and if they respond at all it will only be with the usual greetings to the Dragonborn based on reputation. There is always just this one character in the world that the world actually cares about, and everything else - vanilla or modded - tends to just be ignored. I wanna say the video I'm thinking of was part of a series on character agency in fiction, but it's been too long. I'll post again if I can remember it.

Lol yeah I would love that. It's hilarious how much time and effort was ostensibly put into giving all these NPCs lives and daily routines and even making sure they have houses and assigned beds and relationships and whatnot but then put just the absolute minimum effort into making them feel like actual people. Like Lydia and I have been tight for ages, adventuring and saving people, killing dragons and bandits, hell I even brought her to High Hrothgar. But when we go back to Lakeview Manor my only method of interacting with her is asking her "hey what's a housecarl?" or "what is a thane?" for the 1000th time like I'm Skyrim's dumbest hero.

One of the things Bethesda actually pulled back on from Oblivion was giving NPCs lives of their own. In Oblivion, NPCs would do different things on different days of the week (like go to the temple), and even travel to other cities. It caused some problems, and so rather than fix the problems they just stopped doing that, which is

I don't know what mod pack it's from, probably Immersive Armors, but I have something called "Crimson Archer Cuirass," or something similar, can't remember the exact words. It's boss as hell and is perfect for my sneaky archer character.

Fun fact: in all my attempts at playing Skyrim over the years (and Oblivion for that matter) I have been unable to resist playing a sneaky archer. It's just so much fun, I can't help myself. At least this time I occasionally use a shield/one-handed for a bit of flavor and to get those sweet melee executions.
