That doesn't help, but I think the biggest issue is that she's a young and intelligent progressive woman who isn't afraid of conflict, is good at it, and refuses to shut up. Any progressive woman, especially a woman of color who did what's she doing right now would also have drat near everyone in the political establishment trying to pillory them.

The only remarkable is how bad most of them are at attacking someone who's actually willing to fight back.

I think that is more of an issue with the right wingers who are obsessed with her. For Dems, they don't want to have a similar primary dynamic as there is in the GOP. This is why I've been saying on here for years how important primaries are and how much of a difference even one scalp makes when you win.

I still think a factor that doesn't seem to come up much in these conversations is that AOC obliterated a powerful establishment Democrat who had run unchallenged for decades. The media spun this as Democrats being in disarray and hyping her up as evidence that they were going to gently caress up the election because they were in the middle of a civil war. This backfired because the media is comprised entirely of morons, Democrats crushed the House, and AOC is personally an extremely capable politician and is extremely popular.

So now since she's been prominent in the media, she's been taking advantage of that and keeps pushing her platforms which turned out to be very cool and popular. In a vacuum the new freshman class is largely all great and you wouldn't have picked her to stand out as much as she has, but because of this history it makes sense.

i'll also grant that a little bit of this might be my inherent hipster egalitarian bias

if everybody was paying attention to rashida tlaib instead of AOC / Ilhan Omar / other cool freshmen Congressfolk to whom I am giving not nearly enough credit, I'd be griping about how this compelling lady from the Bronx needs some kudos :v:

I don't doubt that they're worried about this, but I still think misogyny and racism play a big, perhaps even a majority part in how Ocasio-Cortez' critics on the left talk about her.

Of course, I just mean that saying that on the merits they all would deserve similar attention is missing the point that the media sucks garbage rear end so they don't care about merits and that's why everything's stupid and hosed up

Can you imagine if someone in the AOC mold (like a Lee Carter) takes out a D senator in a primary? That would be a loving earthquake....

It's not impossible. De Leon got within 10 points of Feinstein while barely campaigning in California, and that was in a general because our state is cool and lets two people from the same party duke it out during the election.

I could easily see one of the demi-liches from the bigger blue states going out in a primary if their opponent has enough popular support.

Maybe I'm just looking for reasons to like him. The Montana state party seems improbably not-lovely given where they are, and it'd be nice if he's not just another Diet Republican who managed to somehow survive the slaughter.

I'm selling him a little short. He's taken some hard votes. I'm just personally disappointed in him because he's likeable and he's lazy. He can speak directly and persuasively to Republican constituencies but he's content with his lot as a back-bencher.

Thing is, there are a fuckload more of the coastal sorts but Senate distorts representation of a hilarious degree. Example,

Joe Manchin (WV) won with 290,510 votes in 2018.

De Leon (CA) lost with 5,093,942.

So a West Virginia Democrat's vote for Senate was worth 17 times what mine was. Cool, cool.

think of it as a senatorial superdelegate system.

Especially if they're one of those trying for the Presidential primary and get knocked out after tacking Center. Booker, Gillibrand, Harris or Bennett seem like possibilities for making that kind of blunder despite how hard they're working to shore up supposed progressive bonafides. Weren't we talking about Gabbard being a long-time Bad Dem a couple days ago? I could easily see Hawaii offering up a From-The-Left primary challenge, although that probably wouldn't make the same kind of headlines as New York, Colorado, New Jersey or California.

Let's fill out the dream tickets:
2020:
Carter over Warner (clear upgrade)
Tlaib over Gary Peters? (no idea about his positions)
Omar over Tina Smith?? (same as above)
Pressley over Markey (not a bad guy, but getting a bit long in the tooth)

2022:
Barbara Lee over Harris (I assume they're on friendly terms, but it would still be great)
AOC over Schumer (the greatest win of all)

(Also looking at things, in the extremely-hypothetical universe where Obama wins Dick Durbin's seat, could he then not be elected President Pro Tem, or would he just be skipped? I am fully aware this is a silly procedural rules question).
