this lousy virus
How did he go from awful to OK to bland and bad again? Way back before his stories got convoluted beyond interpretation, he had a soft pencils phase that wasn't high art, but it was pleasant.

He didn't want to draw, he wanted to make a comic. That's the difference, the drawing is the medium that conveys the joke rather than a craft itself to be honed.

OMFE! I had conflated memories of that one with the sample Griggs comic. I just remembered the short run he did of Barbarian Diary but all the img links are broken. :(

I don't think I ever read Shanghai Jinx! But please please PLEASE post Rose Marie, I got so sad when I couldn't even remember the names of some of them. Second Nature was also a lot of fun, even if the "occult detective" genre is kind of beaten to death at this point.

In high school I tried getting my friends to help me make a Stinky Kick movie for some class project but they all quit at the last minute. Fuckers.

Greetings fellow former badong members, were any of you also active on GiveUpAlready or LivingWithStyle? Are there seriously only like, 30 people who were online back in the early aughts?

Rose MArie is in the zip :)

Oh wow, Sasha's still alive! She disppeared from Sluggy like 20 years ago and I stopped reading soon thereafter. Why do I remember that???

Or maybe that's not even her! I don't even know. Has anything truly significant development occurred in this comic since the 90s? I mean, it was astounding how many dramatically convoluted storylines could happen in one comic for years on end with absolutely no lasting consequences whatsoever, but maybe things changed in the most recent 17 years of the run. Maybe I should read the ~7000 strips in this series and catch up.

Exploration is ill-advised.
A shitload of early 2000s webcomics were basically aping newspaper comics that the authors presumably dreamed of writing at some point and crashed into how they don't want anything that doesn't appeal to sundowning octogenarians. They tended to end up with the same formulas of reliable blandness, copypasting and status quo.

How Not To Run A Comic hasn't aged too well, but still is a pretty good showcase of all the many, many ways that comics went horribly wrong.

Plus they were usually done by tech nerds. The quality started to rise quickly when >90% of the young people started to spend their free time on the Internet.

I wouldn't say 'quickly'.

Though webcomics tend to demonstrate a principle I've observed and participated in: If you put out content on a regular basis, no matter how outdated, repetitive or otherwise utterly mediocre it is, you are guaranteed to attract a following out of sheer familiarity if nothing else.

Yeah some of them have an audience of maybe five people, but those five people are really really into it

I know right? But, in the early 2000s I was absolutely refreshing webcomics on the daily. Sluggy Freelance, College Roomies From Hell, Joe Average, Achewood, and so on.

I have a Sluggy shirt somewhere still that I got in, like, 2002. They probably still sell it :)

was road waffles the one where a guy and girl hitch hiker meet up and one of them is running from an ex who's angry about a stolen oasis record? and then there's a bunch of poo poo about the world ending? via a paintball war? I think someone loses an eye and then a vampire replaces it by cutting out his own eye.

Also Bob The Angry Flower is good poo poo.

edit- also thank you for the atomic toy archive :3:

people say "make poo poo regularly and it'll succeed via inertia" but that dead rear end doesn't apply to webcomics, make poo poo regularly enough and you will go loving bonkers and decide that 1) everything needs to be megaverses 2) my gag a day gamer comic absolutely needs a lovecraftian abomination metaplot 3) i can do two comics at once i'll just make multiple versions of everyone 3) hey we can get koreans to animate this and make big bucks on youtube 4) stop help where did my fanbase go?

the thing about most webcomics which lose themselves to batshit insanity is that the point where things go south is rather genreally visible. with sinfest i just . . . what? how did it become this weird anti-porn screed. in 2018. dude is one of the oldest in the game at this point and NOW he's going batty? why.
