Yeah RE1 always felt like an old school adventure game to me as well. RE2 and especially 3 action'ed it up. Code Veronica was ...something. REmake and RE0 went back to teh more horror roots and then RE4 was like "gently caress it, let's have a room of lava and a cave troll!"'

And it's glorious.

all three of the first RE games are more puzzle games than action. you can kill everything in RE2 and 3 iirc unlike the first game but you're almost always better off knowing what you need to kill and not interacting with anything else.

RE2's about as long as RE1. You could theoretically wake up one morning and sit down for 16 hours and play through both back to back with no knowledge of where to go, if you're any good at puzzles and very bad at making decisions for your body.

Code: Veronica is weird due to the fact that it was only written by Flagship, Capcom’s scripting studio, but programmed by SEGA, so it’s basically a facsimile of Resident Evil that doesn’t quite feel right. The biggest example is the combat knife being effective as more than just a way to get yourself killed quickly.

It’s very interesting for a few reasons. It was the first RE with real-time backgrounds instead of pre-rendered backdrops, it was the first one to have you play as characters from two different previous games and also the one where the plot went from “Italian horror movie cheese” to “monkeys on crack write this after dropping acid while watching soap operas”.

It had potential but the only thing I still like about it nowadays is the music. The RE games don't get enough credit for their soundtracks and CV possibly had the best one ever.

But consider this. A great theme for a loving nothing character. Alexia has about one line in the game and everything else is really bad evil laughter. They even robbed her of her one memorable "moment" in CVX. She totally bitchslaps Wesker in CV but in CVX they redid the cutscene where he takes her on all Matrix style and then leaves as suave as ever.

I knew nothing about the Tofu thing in RE2. I immediately looked it up on YT after seeing the most recent RE2make trailer, I'm wondering if it'll be the same requirements to unlock in the new game or if it'll be a bit easier to get.

So hey another Persona 5 question. Apparently there is a whole thing with Sojiro and Futaba's uncle and the very last step is you go to a church and there's a whole scene there.

Except... I never got any of that? I did get the small backstory about Futaba's uncle but I never got anything with dealing with him in Mementos, and I certainly never had any scenes to do with the church. He was one of the few confidants I maxed out too. Is that stuff tied into Futaba's social link as well?

I played through GoW recently and I really didn't expect there to be so many chest puzzles. Or that many chests in general. Having a "hidden" chest in like every other room is just too much. Game was good though.

I didn't mind the chest puzzles too much except for the one in the mountain where you have to move the small wind pedestal. I had NO IDEA I could pick the thing up so I spent forever combing over every inch of the surrounding area.. except for going right up to the thing itself

I looked this up

This request can only be obtained through the Hierophant Confidant. You must complete this request to finish that Confidant. This request is different than all of the others because only Joker will fight the Shadow with none of your party assisting you outside of Futaba. After you get the request, you can't activate it the normal way by going to Mementos with your party. You have to find Futaba outside the cafe and talk to her to initiate the request.

:psyduck: I don't remember doing that at ALL. The only fight I remember doing with Joker alone was the Casino arena

I'm with you. I definitely appreciate the influence it's had on modern 3rd-person games but as a RE title it represented a dramatic shift away from what I liked about the series up until that point, which only amplified in 5 and 6. The village in RE4 is pretty decent fun but I've always felt like the tension of the game completely shits the bed in the 2nd half.

RE2 is unassailable in my eyes.

exquisite tea posted:

Yeah, the puzzles are one of the things in that game that I like without reservation.

Kilometers Davis posted:

They're definitely creative and fun in terms of immediate mechanical feedback, but sort of at odds with the design philosophy of the rest of the game. Like, the puzzles themselves are really fun but the act of getting around to all of them with all the graphical fluff and slow predetermined movement sort of takes the wind out of my sails. I grew impatient with the breadcrumbing of the story because it started to feel like the actual focus of the developers was encouraging me to dick around. So, in the end the game felt like a not so smooth combination of several design philosophies. This is also reflected in the needless number of progression systems thrown in just for the hell of it. Like, the devs on HorizonZD were smart enough to say to themselves midway through some of that menu nonsense "gently caress this, strip it down", and it's kind of wild that for a game that's often as polished as GoW can be there are other times when it just feels like it's throwing any old poo poo at the wall.

The Witness, Steven's hotdog, and Talos principle are top tier puzzle games. Puzzles in actions like gow and dmc4 (dice...) were just annoying barriers. I did them anyway for the platinum trophy, but those and mix and matching runes through so many nested menus were tedious killjoys.

It's more that I find kratos really cumbersome to manoeuvre so these little physical challenges, while not that difficult still end up being frustrating. It's strange that for a game as polished as this it doesn't actually feel that nice to play
