Re: the senate, Colorado and Maine are the likely pickups, and Iowa and North Carolina seem like they're winnable, but I don't think the predictions tell the while story on several other eats. Montana has a very popular former D governor eyeing the nomination, and the Montana state party has shown an impressive degree of strength in post-Trump races. Kansas is surging blue on Every front, and if the state party can keep that momentum going and field a strong candidate I would be very worried if I were that particular R senator. Georgian D's are furious after what happened in the governors race, and if she runs for Senate it would be a very scary thing for the Rs to deal with. A couple people see an R lean in New Hampshire, but I've heard that the D senator there is extremely popular in that Manchin way, so its hard to imagine she's in too much danger. I think the biggest question to be answered is who the Dems are going to field in AZ and how the electorate is going to respond to someone the state actively voted against being handed a Senate seat. I've also been wondering if Kentucky isn't more vulnerable than one might think. I remember seeing polls that favor the Dem in the upcoming Governor's race, and Mitch is reviled by Chuds for being a Rino who sabotages daddy all the time.

I feel like speculating that Tom Cruise might be gay is bad and mean-spirited in a way that it isn't with someone like John Mahoney, but I can't really articulate why.

Though for the record I dunno about the “richer people file with extension” thing since my main experience is “don’t have the info” is the primary criteria, which isn’t always a wealth issue (trying to get W-2s from a company you left can be... fun for some people). My point about extensions was that rich people make their money in other ways than from being an employee who gets W2 wage statements, and for some of those ways (partnerships, e.g.) they won't know what they made last year till mid-April, the deadline for receiving those forms from the issuing entity. By law, employers have to issue W2s by Jan. 31, and if they don't, there are mechanisms for people to file their taxes anyway.

To expand on this. When my parents were kids (we live in Maryland) a minority in their school would be maybe a few black, Jewish and hispanic kids. But overall it was like 98% white. No one dared be openly gay. When I was a kid in the 1990s my school had alot of Asian and Hispanic kids. Still very majority white but my circle of friends was very diverse (muslim, asian, jewish, black, ect). We had friends that we knew were gay, but unfortunately many of the LGBT students were pretty closeted. Now if I talk to my younger cousins who are in high school , they are all in mix-race relationships, LGBT students are open and have their own clubs, and the schools are no longer majority white. So when you have a political party as openly hateful of minorities and LGBT people as Republicans why the gently caress would Gen Z approve of that?

Huh. I saw a thing about this guy on the LCD in the elevator this morning, in a building that let's say would be decidedly on the "Wall Street" side of the conversation, and it was summarizing his career as "a pioneer in index funds, and millions of people's lives have been improved as a result of his work". I was rolling my eyes and assuming it was a typical sort of "he increased the number of zeroes in the economy and therefore the USA as a whole has more money" or something like that, but I guess not. Not at all.

Data Graham posted:Armchair take: kids value having friends more than they value having political opinions, and moreover these days kids have friends who are LGBTQ This is amazingly true. There are LBGT support clubs in my oldest kids public middle school. He's friends with a boy that transitioned after entering (a different) middle school. They were friends before as well, all the kids in that friend group just shrugged and accepted it and all the parents were cool with it. That kid is so much outwardly happier as a boy now. My youngest is good friends with a kid that decided they didn't want to go by a specific pronoun in 4th grade. Its just not a big deal to that generation.

If you called susan collins during the kavanaugh thing absolutely you would never get anyone to answer the phone call and her office is packed and the mail would be stacked up unread, but like, if you walked over there today she's probably not doing much.
